    cuchara chapel

We were travelling this weekend, and stopped at Cuchara Chapel in Cuchara Colorado.

Its a summers only resort town chapel.

Visit and sign in once and you are considered a member (non voting!)

That way they can claim the largest membership with the poorest attendance record.

They have neat poem out front I will share:

    Where Presbyterians say "trespasses"
And her Methodists preach about sin
    Where Episcopalians sit with Nazarenes
    And affirm their each "amen"
Where Catholics joyously sing Baptist hymns
And Church of Christ members are found
Being uplifted as they listen to
    Each beautiful organ sound
    Where every Sunday is Pentecost
And every hour in worship and prayer
Is one that's filled with love and grace
Because the Lord of us all is there.

Wonderful hymns from the Methodist hymnal, great organ music, friendly folks, today's guest preacher is retired Presbyterian.

Early service packed, assume regular service would be even more so.

Been a long time since I was in a service at that chapel. Great memories!

We enjoyed at least 6 visits to Cuchara in the 90's.
Had a wonderful time, and we did attend the chapel each time we were there.
We rented a log cabin from a friend. Some great memories.
Met a few bears that wandered up around the cabin in the evening. Had one on the porch one night.

I attended a similar type of church service many years ago at Pioneer Village in Minden, Nebraska. They hold it on summer Suindays in the old west church building that is part of the museum. A local retired minister preached. Actually very enjoyable to worship with about 75 people you had never met before but who wanted to take the time to worship even while on vacation.

Is the ski resort still open? I went there one winter, which was supposed to be their last. Then, the following year, due to some freak weather, they had snow when most other resorts didn't and opened back up to take advantage. I've wondered since if they were able to stay open. Obviously they're not open in August, but did it look like there was still a thriving ski resort in town?
    ...just my $.02.

Resort is closed at the moment but there is a plan in the works to re-open it. Still a popular summer place.

We didn't see any bears. We see them all the time here at our town, along with elk, mountain lions, deer, turkey, etc.

But the condos we stayed in must get the bears pretty bad--not only bear resistant dumpsters, but also had them charged with an electric fence charger. You have to turn off the charger, unlock the padlock, open the dumpster, close it, lock it, then start the charge again.
