Old issues of Herald of Holiness

Several issues of the Herald from the '50s and '60s were donated to Christian Literature for Africa, where I work. I don't think we'll send them to Africa, but I've had some fun looking through them.

They regularly listed prayer requests from anyone who sent them in.
Missionary addresses were freely listed with no thought to their safety.

The Dec. 1955 issue give the yearly stats. There were 4,090 church is the U.S., with 190 in Canada and the British Isles and 40 overseas home-missions areas (considered domestic). There were also 608 church on Foreign Missions Fields and 725 mission stations and outstations.

Stephen S. White was the editor. Care to guess who the General Superintendents were in 1955?

We also received several issues of Church School Builder, a Nazarene Sunday School magazine that I don't even remember. In the August 1954 issue they introduced a new "build-up picture" Bible story tool called Nu Vu.

My birth was even announced in the Herald of Holiness back in 1951! The COTN was much more of a "family" back then in many ways. But I am glad we are too big and worldwide in scope now to have a publication that would be that parochial in nature.

    That's right, of course.

I agree. I found in another issue a list of people who had visited the publishing house during the previous week.

I remember when the Hearld was a weekly publication, later every other week and then monthly. Earlier Dr. Chapman was the editor and had an article on the front page every week. Since both my mother and father were ordained by Dr. Chapman in 1935, dad in May at the Idaho-Oregon District Assembly and my mother in August of that year at the Iowa District Assembly they were very fond on Dr. Chapman and often made reference to something from his writings in their sermons.

Announcements of births, marriages and obituaries were part of every week's issue along with the prayer requests. I could have named the GSs without looking them up.

Along with Jim, I could've probably named all the GS's of that era.
And......every week the Herald faithfully printed that list of people who had recently stopped drinking coffee..

Yes, John, that old Nazarene witicism that those that had given up coffee were in the Obituary column.

Oh, I was going to ask if there were some Mormons among the Nazzies, John, until I saw Jim's mention of those non-coffee-drinkers being in the obit column!
