    Preaching your favorite hymns/songs

I am a lectionary preacher from Advent to Pentecost, and for the last few years I have been doing series in the summer. I have preached through all 16 Articles of Faith; the book of James; last summer I did a "you asked for it" series where they chose the topics. This year I am thinking of preaching my favorite songs. Have any of you done this? I'm thinking of hymns, CCM and a few secular songs with Christian themes. It sounds like fun to me.

    Any song suggestions?

    Here is my preliminary list:

    And Can it Be?
    Silence - Jars of Clay
All I Need (I Did Not Catch Her Name) - Caedmon's Call
    Be Thou My Vision
A Mighty Fortress is our God
Step by Step - Rich Mullins
If I stand - Rich Mullins
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
These Thousand Hills - Third Day version of Jacob's Trouble
All Creatures of our God and King

We had a church on our district that did a series based on secular songs. It was pretty interesting. They are no longer Nazarene so make of that what you will.

I have long wanted to preach "Under Pressure" by Queen, and several U2 songs. I did use "Closer to Fine" by the Indigo Girls in a message to highlight how the world has changed. I've also used Hurt by Johnny Cash and "Sooner or later God will cut you down" by Cash.

Our pastor once preached on "Crystal Blue Persuasion" & played the whole song/video in the sermon. Alot of the sermon was on the testimony of Tommy James who sung the song. I really liked it!

I think it's a great idea, so long as you tie it all to Scripture, which I'm sure you will.

The closest I've come to what you describe was advent 2013, when the themes of the messages came from Christmas carols: O Holy Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, Away in a Manger, and O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

I've done several over the years based on movies or TV shows, but not music. I'm just not enough of a music guy for that.

I just stumbled across this today and thought of your summer series. Looks like this was a very different series... but maybe there will be some inspiration in there for you?
