Now That NazNet Is Being Put Out To Pasture . . .

What should we do in our few remaining days together? I want to hit 5000 posts, and I still have quite a ways to go. Maybe give Billy Cox and Jim Chabot moderator powers and see what they do with them? Or have an open free-for-all on political discourse? Lift the moratorium on personal attacks? Let's go out with a bang!

(And yes, I'm joking on at least some of those suggestions.)

Let's see if we can get this site shut down before August 1st.

Someone pick a date & time. Let's all visit Naznet and hit "refresh" for 10 minutes at that time and see if we can crash it!

I don't think so. Years ago a friend an I were political opponents, never would we miss an opportunity to stick a thumbtack in the other. He beat me in an election one year and I came back a couple years later and sidelined him. Eventually we found ourselves serving together and could fight face to face. Our Town Planner resigned to take a higher paying job and we were left with a dilemma. He was Chair and I was Clerk, together we would now have to take the responsibilities of Planner and lead. The two of us sat down and hashed out a division of responsibilities and a plan to move forward. Most interesting was that our differences helped us, he took the tasks that I was loathe to do and vice verse. We worked together side by side for over a year and have remained friends to this day.

Billy and I disagree on a lot of things and we disagree passionately. I have a high opinion of Billy and could see a similar scenario if we were forced to work together.

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

So it would be like Leslie Knopp and Ron Swanson. (That's a Parks & Rec reference for those of you not up on your pop culture.)

I guess it depends upon which one of us would like to be portrayed as an anti government guy who enjoys working with wood.

    Oh no! The arcade!

Forget the post count. Must achieve a final Mahjongg score of over 40,000.

Edited to add: Sorry Karen. You can have the final victory, if you'd like. It just needs to be over 40,000. (I recommend a touch screen.)

I think NazNet is only being "put out to pasture" if we let it. To me it's like moving a congregation from one building to another. If everyone switches buildings, the church continues. If people refuse to move to the new building, then, yeah, that's the end of the congregation.

I'm not pretending that the new building is perfect, but obviously, with nearly 2 Billion people are using Facebook, there are advantages as well.

BTW - I do hope that many of our forum regulars will be active on the Facebook groups. I think they can teach nominal Facebook users a thing or two about how to have an on line discussion that goes beyond "this is a picture of what we had for dinner last night."

Really, the arcade is a poor step-child on this forum. I installed it, got everything running, and pretty much forgot it. The only time I looked at it was when someone had a problem with it.

I'm the same way with Facebook games. However, I understand that you can set up Mahjongg tournaments, etc, on Facebook too. If someone wants to look into it you are welcome to use the General Discussion group to look for players.

Well, you also reset all the scores a few times.

I have learned over the years that sometimes procrastination is a virtue. Neglect can also be a good thing.

[whine] But there are people already using that building that we don't know! And they don't do things like we do. They sing weird songs we've never heard before! And there are so many of them! I'll never be able to keep them straight! I don't even know where to sit in that new place! I want to stay in the old place! Besides -- as I have pointed out before on NazNet -- Jesus said, "The old is better!" (Luke 5:39)

I'm enjoying some final rounds on the arcade games. There are certainly some interesting ones. I noticed Othello was open and played a few rounds. Then I needed to lose in order to end the contest and post my score. So I started playing badly. And won two more games before I finally managed to lose!

This game obviously needs to spend some time with my Othello tutor -- the Commodore Amiga 500. Not only was it good, it also had attitude. You see, while in the PC world the big debate was the color of monochrome, the Commodore 64 had 1,024 colors. And while the entire sound repertoire of PCs was "BEEP!" Commodore was playing Bach two-part inventions. Then came the Amiga 500 with even more colors and sound options. It talked! It had a synthesized voice that sounded like the computer-generated weather warnings you might sometimes still hear. "Seek shelter now." We had a spelling game where one could even tweak the sounds to get better pronunciation of the words. That game was very affirming. I still sometimes hear echoes in my mind of it's mechanical praise. "Very good. You got them right. You got them ALL right!"

Oh, but the Othello game. SMH. For that game, it had a totally different attitude: "I am winning. You are losing. Give up now." I don't know how many times I turned off the sound to prove I had the upper hand in the relationship. It was mean! A terrible winner. And win it did. It had multiple difficulty levels and taught me much about Othello strategy as it beat me over and over.

Like I said, this NazNet arcade game could learn a lot from that Amiga 500 game, although I don't miss the attitude -- too much. I still sometimes hear it in my head, especially when I play Othello. Or get them all right.

Re: Now That NazNet Is Being Put Out To Pasture . . .

Oooh, have an Othello game IRL! Don't recall seeing it here unless it's a rather recent addition. I just never did check this at it, too much.
Not sure why. Do recall trying to play PACman on it.

Sounds like we may have to have an OTHELLO game if we ever meet in person, Hey?

ETA: Thought I'd look at the arcade now, tho' not try to play anything on this small phone screen.
Saw the archery. I've tried to play archery a few times, too. I did have a regular one of those on my PC before it crashed, because I always liked archery IRL. Then there was a pool game on my PC, and bowling. In fact, there was a small bowling one on the phone here, until I started taking some things off to try to get the phone app to work right again w/a bit more space (tho' those things didn't help).

Commodore was playing Bach two-part inventions.

This, of course, was way before you could just shoot the video with your phone, edit it on your phone, and then distribute it worldwide in HD for free.

We had a Commodore SX-64. This was a “portable” version of the 64. It had a 5inch color crt built in. It also had a Vic 20 slot and many ports.

While visiting the NazNet Facebook group (#NotMyNazNet #DOTCOMforever) just now, Facebook was kind enough to suggest this group to me:

    It also suggested this group:

I think Facebook needs to work on its algorithms more.

Seeing Manny's picture adjacent to Cynthia is just mind-boggling. Mind-boggling might not be the best way to phrase it, but I'm not sure what else to use to describe the pairing.

We can start a new group insofar as I am a Nazarene concerned about Social Justice. Who is with me?

Probably easier to start a group titled "I'm an unjust nazarene too"

I was also amused, but not at all surprised, to see Everett Piper, the Oklahoma Wesleyan University president who has targeted Andy McGee's ministry, show up as one of the "Concerned Nazarenes". There seems to be more of them that aren't really a part of our tribe than are.

Makes me wonder what people mean when they talk about some groups as being "more Nazarene" than others.

THIS is what you SEE upon arrival at Facebook. And you don't find out WHO Susan is replying to until clicking all over. (& it's not Emiko, as it first appears here). Backwards movement? Yes, because one cannot quote someone, as here (MAYBE TAGS NEED TO BE USED MORE, SO IT'S OBVIOUS IN THAT WAY WHOSE POST ONE IS RESPONDING TO???):

I bought my first computer in 1987. I paid $1000. It was an Apple IIc. I used it all through college.

You might say it was the first laptop if you don't include the monitor.

FB shows you one recent comment left by someone who's a FB friend of yours. I think it's their way of enticing you to read more of the conversation.

If you click/tap on the comment they show you, it should take you directly to it in the thread, so you don't have to click all over.

Re: Now That NazNet Is Being Put Out To Pasture . . .

Yeah, you do, if you want to see more than one disconnected comment.

Under thread's comments it will say how many replied. (tho' as often as NOT people click on main comment, it seems, when they mean to answer one BELOW IT, so you're not sure to whom they're responding ~~ that "outline-indented format that some don't seem to understand over there, so RETURN to OP to reply, sometimes that even leaves you wondering which one they're agreeing with, unless they write clearly; have seen this & asked more than once already & was sometimes surprised by their finally clarifying. So, anyway . . . Click. Click BACK to see other comments & their replies, Click again, then click back again, et cetera, until ~~ b/c you ARE trying to concentrate on reading rather than click patterns ~~ you can forget if your next click was to be backwards or forward!!

So, will have to be a subject that really piques one's interest to wade through a thread of any length after a few posts, unlike here where you can be taken to "first unread post" Oh well . . . it'll keep me OFF there more than here, looks like.

ETA: Just wait . . . if you've not yet experienced the, "Now where was I!?" over there, it'll come.
