    Anybody going to ONU Homecoming?

I am blessed to be able to attend my 30-year reunion at Olivet this Oct. 30. My boss, Edna Lochner, asked me earlier this year if we would be going to homecoming, and I told her we couldn't afford to. She spoke to some friends and my pastor. They ended up giving me a surprise party for my birthday and $350.00 for homecoming! My hotel reservations are made. My husband and I have tickets for the basketball game, reunion breakfast, football game and concert with Larnelle Harris, Selah and Taylor Mason. And we even have a little money left over for gas. It's at least a 5-hour drive, with no easy way to get there.

I'm pretty sure Nelson will be around. Any other Naznetters planning to be there?

My/our only plans at present are the Homecoming Chapel - dedication of the new Centennial Chapel - and President's Prayer Breakfast.

Here's the deal. We LIVE here and can/do attend MANY events on campus. We feel it's unfair to take up the seats of alums who want/need to attend but cannot because we're there.

I had already planned on posting here next week about the LIVE streaming - especially the chapel service.

It will be my 20th year but I will not be going. Too far away, and now that my aunt has passed away, the joy is kind of gone. She lived nearby and I would stay with her that weekend.

I don't go because it is hard to get away this time of year when you are a faculty member at another Nazarene University!
This would be my 37th year as an alum.
I am jealous of you. Have a great time!!!

We won't be there in time for the chapel dedication. Maybe I can watch it online later. Nelson, I understand. My dad lives in Nampa, and I think he's of the same mind. He used to have season tickets to the NNU basketball games, though. I think I haven't even been on campus since homecoming of 1990, so I'm looking forward to it.

there's been MANY changes on campus since then - hopefully all of them for the good. Please anticipate being pleasantly surprised. They are doing their best to really spiff the place up, Charlene.

    And it's working.

Imagine winding - not straight - brick sidewalks all over campus.

    It's happening.

Charlene, that's one of those things I've tho't about since having this unreliable vehicle in which I'd not dare even start out, its having been out of town only once since I had it, and barely making it ten miles without being hauled thereafter. And you don't take a borrowed car over any weekend. That thing's done more than hurt my $$$ ... it's kept me from even trying to have a bit of get-out-of-town relief.

Nelson, I'm looking forward to all the changes. The last time we were there McHie Arena was new. A couple of years ago when a student called asking for a donation I kept him on the phone for half an hour asking about changes on campus. He was very nice to this old lady. lol. Gina, I sure understand that. We wouldn't take our van on a trip like that, but my husband's car is in a lot better shape, even though it just turned over 100,000 miles. We've wondered in the past if people rent a nice car to drive to homecoming to kind of show off.

I was born in Kankakee, so this would be my 61st reunion, but I will not be attending. I attended ENC's Homecoming last weekend, and will be at Mt. Vernon's next month.

Especially people our age -- with children the age of our children. Our Subaru Outback, the vehicle of choice for most trips (other than when we need the passenger space of the minivan) turned over 181,000 miles yesterday, by far a record for any vehicle we have ever owned, even outstripping the minivan at 154,000.

That's the legacy of three bachelor degrees at private universities earned over the course of eight years. (Oh, the vehicles we could have bought with that money rather than invest it in the future of our children. Sigh.)

I used to get nervous when a vehicle started closing in on 100,000 miles. I suppose it has been freeing to discover vehicular life on the other side of that bump in the road. (Remember when they used to start over after 99,999.9?)

Oh, and sorry, but we won't be at homecoming. We were there the last two years and didn't see you so we made other plans for this year.

@Marsha, Oh, just because of us, huh? We were hoping to go last year for Don's 30th, but he didn't have a benefactor like I did.
