    Concerned meets Emergent Nazarene Video

Okay folks, we've all had our share of fits over the Concerned vs. Emergent debacle.

One Nazarene fella took it upon himself to humor the situation

    Here is the link: http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/7566347/

I hope you have many laughs, and please don't take it too seriously.

"We have a DVD. It is 3 hours long. It has a lot of important people in it."
"Can I get it on Netflix?"

    Awesome!

Yes we have Bob, we have had our fill of it. So thank you so much for posting this fanciful example of hate speech. I'm glad that you can feel good about this sort of stuff.. Har, har, har, laugh it up boys, nothing like a good joke at the expense of others eh?

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

good call Jim, let's be fair and balanced about this...

This One in particular is "dedicated to those fun folks at Naz Net."
And This is just plain classic.

seriously, some of these are actually kinda funny, even though they're meant to insult me and others like me.

Couldn't agree with you more Shea. That stuff is out there, I wouldn't post it on naznet though. If I did and it offended someone, I think that I would need to apologize. I will freely admit that some of which you have linked to makes me laugh, and it also makes me wince, some jokes are best left private.

I am very conservative, skirting very close to being fundamentalist. I found the video to be quite funny!

    Jim,

If you could see some of the hate speech that appears on my YouTubes you would know why I find this humorous. I've considered taking them down, but then I think to myself, why not leave them up? The videos are honest, accurate and to the point (and not 3 hrs. long!). Whenever a situation is humorously parodied, of course, there is going to be a nugget of truth in it. And if the Concerned group wants to produce a humorous video, I'm sure we'll find some humor in that as well. But the last time I checked, not many of those folks even had a sense of humor, at least not to my knowledge.

    coupla points
-although I'm in no way responsible for the video, I do apologize if it offends you.
-Most of what I linked makes me laugh- either because it's just funny, or because it's such a blatant misrepresentation.
-None of these jokes are private. They're all over the web, and show up in my facebook news feed somewhat regularly. The "Jesus Buddha cups" picture on Sacred Sandwich (posted last August, I think) was shown to me by a friend who claims both Christianity and Buddhism. I don't see why we can't all laugh at something that clearly makes fun of both sides (or did you not notice that it was the "emergent Nahzarene" in the video who said "you can tell I'm emergent by my funky hair style"?). I guess if it bugs you, don't watch it, but I don't think it qualifies as "hate speech."

Maybe they do have a sense of humor after all! Some of those things are funny. And No, I don't see it as hate speech. I can laugh at myself, and believe me there is a lot to laugh at.

Heck, even my 8 year old son thought the video was hallyrous, he's watched it twice!

I understand, and I have seen the hate speech that has been sent your way, it is embarrassing to me, and I am sorry that it has been directed your way. But this forum is labeled as good clean fun, and this isn't good clean fun.

Loosen up a bit Jim, take a deep breath, it's not the end of the world. I suppose the moderator can move the thread if it is appropriate to do so.

I'm ok Bob, I can laugh as well as the next guy. But not in mixed company. Look the video was probably funny, I might have even caught some of the humor if it was posted elsewhere. But naznet is not the place for this, here it becomes editorial.

Good for you Bob, that is exactly what I would say to my nine year old if he were to ask what an emergent is. Here is to hoping that by the time they are able to understand this stuff, it will be a history lesson rather than current events.

Probably not though Jim. Some people thrive on adversity. The names may change, the the concept will always exist.

A DISCLAIMER FROM THE CREATOR OF THE VIDEO: this exercise of my own fictive imagination is presented in good clean fun (indeed!), with apologies to all Concerned Nazarenes, Emergent Nazarenes, Emergent Christians, Baptists of every variety (including any "Concerned Baptists," if there is such a thing), all Catholics, wanderers of prayer labyrinths, gardeners of prayer labyrinths, practitioners of yoga, anyone affiliated with Trevecca Nazarene University (especially President Dan Boone), bloggers, Netflix, knitters, grandmothers, anyone who appeared in or was involved in the making of the Concerned Nazarenes' DVD, people with funky hairstyles, and people who wear ties.

    Thank you for watching. Sincerely,

Thanks Jon. I thought for sure I'd dialogued on here before, but maybe I was just lurking...oh well, I suppose I've waited long enough to jump in! Where better to start than with my silly cartoon that seems to be making such a splash! I never realized how emergent I apparently am! ;-)

You may have... I'm sure I've talked with you before... either here or on a blog. NazNet did suffer a major system failure a few months back, and everything was lost... which could explain it.

I was going to comment that you once had a blog that I followed fairly regularly, even though it sometimes hurt my head, and my feelings (in that Holy Spirit is convicting me kind of way) but then it kind of dropped off. As I recall due to some lame batch of excuses about having a new baby, moving across the big pond and writing a thesis, or something like that, then I got a message on Facebook stating that it's been resurrected at a new URL.

Welcome back, and congratulations on the successful defense of your dissertation.

Is it OK for a non-Naz Naznetter to think this dialogue was hilarious? Hope so, cause otherwise I'll just have to chortle from outside the fold.

Pretty funny stuff, actually. To show that we Concerned Nazarenes also have a sense of humor, I sent the following spoof privately to some of my friends- but refrained from posting it publicly to a whole bunch of people. I am keeping it password protected on my blog, and if you want to see it, here is the link: http://reformednazarene.wordpress.co...rence-a-spoof/

    The password is: naznetspoof

I thought it up while I was wondering what in the world were the topics going to be for the NazNet Conference in Windsor Hills.

Actually, you got one thing right - I indeed showed Dr. Hardy's library in the Nielson Renewal Wing of the Inn to Hans & Edwin. :-)

(Although I'm not sure that I pointed out that it was Dr. Hardy's library - just that it was a place for pastors to come to rest & study.)

lol, good stuff! Wish we had the budget for all of that.

On the downside, I hate it when I go to a conference and they give me books I already have .

I'm glad you were able to appreciate the humor (or attempt at humor), Manny. Your conference spoof was clever as well.

Ok, what's this "Plaid" all about? All I could find when googling was "Forever Plaid," which is musical. Did y'all play in this, or is it an entirely different sort of "Plaid"?

This One in particular is "dedicated to those fun folks at Naz Net."
Shea! 'Know how much time of mine you wasted (well, "you" helped by posting the link ) with all those photos? Did notice, tho', that they spoke of "wasting empathy" -- uh, tho't someone had to have BTDT to have empathy; they confused it with "sympathy," I'd say. There was something, tho', that particularly struck my funny bone ... tho't I'd remember it, but not at the moment ... after looking at some other things inbetween, such as Manny's spoof.

Well, it's not "dirty," so by deduction, might it be considered "clean"? At least we've not seen anyone here become incendiary, defamatory, or outright hostile, so we'll just keep an eye on the thread, OK, Jim, rather than deleting it? Tho't perhaps it could be moved to the CE forum ... but guess it can remain here, after all. If we can no longer laugh at ourselves, we're in bad shape [ref Proverbs 17:22].

Gina, if you add Brannon's name to your search, one of the links is this one. Definition #2 will answer your question. I was hanging out with teenagers during those years and I think "Plaid" was at "Youth Fest" in Bloomington, Indiana at least once.

Sorry to take this thread off-topic, but Brannon sang in a band in the mid-nineties and I saw them a few times. They were really nice to me and the guys that I was then trying to start a band with in my youth group. They were a big encouragement to us, so I was overcome with nostalgia.

Sounds good to me, if others can get a good laugh at the expense of myself and others like me then go for it. Har, har, har, yuck it up!

I'm sorry, but a very good friend of mine was the Minister of Music at the church in Xenia many years ago. He was spared from the tornado's that tor through there, taking refuge in a furniture store that was destroyed right above him. From that experience he wrote the song "Peace in the Midst of the Storm". To see that this sort of thing is now what comes from there is more than I can take.

So why not, lets throw some more wood on the fire, just to make sure it keeps burning until every last CN is faithfully attending a Baptist church where they will be safe eh?

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

I thought the song was written by Stephen R. Adams but wasn't positive so googled it. The first two links I tried gave lyrics without crediting the author of those lyrics. (Isn't there a law against that sort of thing?) So I tried a link I thought might be more useful -- http://www.naznet.com/community/show...His-Peace-quot . Sure enough, lyrics AND credit to the composer! Thanks, Nelson. And thanks, Jim, for reminding us of the story behind it. I don't think a change of musical style "many years" later at Xenia 1st Church detracts a bit from either the story or the song. Are you also concerned that the legacy of that great composer of church music Johann Sebastian Bach has been lost by churches that once featured his music and no longer do?

By the way, according to a film I once saw, Bach was fired as church organist after he stirred up great concern by persisting on introducing his new-fangled music to the church. Have you heard the worldly lilt in songs such as "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire"? Stack that one up against the holy Gregorian chants and you, too, would be concerned! I don't know exactly what is happening at Xenia 1st, but it can't be any worse than that, can it? And yet, the church survived and music by Bach is now counted among the classics.
