I know that sounds elementary, but that is how we ended up with the truck we have and I should have known better. Our last camper was a 40' Teton Homes, it had a dry weight of 16,200# and a gvw of 21000#, we opted to tow it with our 1992 Ford F350 diesel truck with a Gale Banks turbo. In three years I went through 6 sets of brakes, 3 transmissions and a motor. It didn't wear out the brakes it cracked the rotors and twice the pads came unglued from the backings. I was faced with a choice, get rid of the camper and get a smaller one, find a nice seasonal site to park it on, or go buy a big truck. So we got the truck, then the camper started to age and we still had a little guy that I wanted to bring up camping so another camper was in order. This may be our last one, it is still in good enough shape to last another five or six years. Then again we will still need something to live in at campmeetings, I don;t plan on giving that up anytime soon!

Fifth wheel is for sure the way to go, just so much easier to drive and back up.
That was a huge camper but I'm surprised it was so hard on a one ton pickup. From what I hear a tow rig like yours is highly sought after by trucking companies. They love getting hold of a medium duty commercial truck like that. Even full time RVers don't put even a small percentage of the miles on it that a trucking company does.

Our camper weighs in at around 7500 dry and our Tundra is rated at 10,500. I sure hope we don't end up with some of the problems you had with the first truck!

Thanks, that was excruciatingly tedious and hard. As one who has BAs in History and French/Spanish, I am more used to history or literature papers. In those, there is a definite beginning, middle and end. Not so with this sermonette. I felt like I was all over the place. And it was supposed to be 14 - 20 pages long but couldn't figure out how to narrow it down well hence the 26 long pages.

    Isaiah 7:10-16
7:10 Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying,

7:11 Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.

7:12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test.

7:13 Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also?

7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.

7:15 He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.

7:16 For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.

Re: Who will be the last person to add to this thread?

    Matthew 1:18-25
1:18 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

1:19 Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly.

1:20 But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

1:21 She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

1:22 All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

1:23 "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us."

1:24 When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife,

1:25 but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

O God of Elizabeth and Mary,
you visited your servants with news of the world's redemption
in the coming of the Savior.
Make our hearts leap with joy,
and fill our mouths with songs of praise,
that we may announce glad tidings of peace,
and welcome the Christ in our midst. Amen.

    Shepherd of Israel,
may Jesus, Emmanuel and son of Mary,
be more than just a dream in our hearts.
With the apostles, prophets, and saints,
    save us, restore us,
and lead us in the way of grace and peace,
that we may bear your promise into the world. Amen.

Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

    God of promise,
you have given us a sign of your love
through the gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior,
who was promised from ages past.
    We believe as Joseph did
    the message of your presence
    whispered by an angel,
and offer our prayers for your world,
confident of your care and mercy for all creation. Amen.

I think my goal is to be last one to post at night. All be it that it is usually actually morning. If I manage to post after everyone else has gone to bed then I usually get about 5 or 6 hours out of it. Of course when I start back to work in January I will have a little more trouble managing it.

I should admit that I'm not really a gentle driver. I have no qualms driving a thousand miles a day, and I generally move at a good clip, so I may be partly to blame for killing the little truck.

You are right about the miles though. We have had this truck for going on twelve years now and it is just coming up on 60,000 miles. We used to camp a lot more before we bought the other house, now we use it mostly for campmeeting and an occasional outing.

I found a picture of the old camper, but not the pickup. The truck we still have was painted white back then.

I'm thinking that you will have good luck pulling a 7,500# camper with a 10K rated truck. Especially if you drive reasonably, I can't help but think that you are a very reasonable fellow!

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

Nice! Is that a kitchenette slide out I see above the wheels?

I would love to get back to something that size once it is just the two of us again. I have decided that there will be no more big trucks, if there is to be another camper it must be towable with something that we already own.

This spring, I had gotten the idea to trade both camper and truck in for something smaller. Between the trade in loss and the price of a new Airstream, I have retreated back to the status quo.

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

The slide out is the smallest slide out around, basically it moves the couch back, giving a bit more floor space. The camper isn't our first choice. We want our son and his family to be able to use it too, so we bought (1) a bumper pull rather than a 5vr and (2) a camper with bunk beds for the kids. We hope to do quite a bit of traveling with our next rig and we'll probably end up with a 24' or 26' 5ver.

Still, by replacing the bunks with a walk in closet/pantry, this one would be a pretty nice match for us if we were headed out for more over the road use.

For time actually on the road, I think your set up is terrific. Once in a campground, though, I wouldn't like having that big truck for sight seeing, etc.

    My RV philosophy is:
    1. Seasonal camper: small/medium bumper pull
    2. Lots of time on the road with longer stays: 5th Wheel
    3. Lots of time on the road with shorter stays: Motor Home with toad

Alright, if we are showing off campers, here are a few of ours. Not visible are the bunks for the girls.

This thread is reminiscent of the days when Southern congressmen would be philibustering - they would do just about everything up to and including reading the phone directory into the Congressional Record. If I crecall correctly, Huey Long once included a recipe for 'potlikker' into one of his speeches.
