I've mentioned Feasting on the Word here before, a commentary edited by Barbara Brown Taylor and David Bartlett. It comments on each weekly lectionary passage from four perspectives: theological, pastoral, exegetical, and homiletical. Since we're about to "begin again" with Advent, I was looking up the series again to order it. I was surprised to find the whole first volume (Year A, Volume 1: Advent through Transfiguration) on Google books.

Jeremy - Pardon my ignorance. I can read the entire book by going through the link you provided. My understanding that Google Books only provided snippets of books, though you can research entire books.

It's a shame Google books is goofing up the 2-page view. Odd-numbered pages are always on the right. It's putting them on the left... which is breaking up the Scripture passages and causing the four columns not to line up anymore.
Looks like a helpful book! If I ever go back to using the lectionary, I'll be sure to look it up!

I'm back to the lectionary this week and for the foreseeable future. So I've been using this commentary for the first time (I only own the one that begins with Advent next week, but ENC's Library has all the others).
It's superb.
I just received my first two copies of Feasting on the Word (Year A, Vol. 1-2). Finished the introduction this morning. "Yet the Sunday sermon is how the preacher ministers to most of the people most of the time ... it is the congregation's one opportunity to here directly from their pastor about what life in Christ means and why it matters." "The books in the series are not Saturday books. Our aim is to help preachers go deeper, not faster, in a world that is in need of saving words." I'm looking forward to deepening my prep. for Advent.

I have been using this resource for my Advent preparation and have found it extremely helpful, well organized, thought provoking, both biblically and theologically practical. The company that vends this resource is running a sale on Year A, Volume 2 Lent - Eastertide for $17.98. If you haven't already picked one up this might be a good volume to start with. Looks like the sale starts December 15th.

I confess that the image of the analog/digital clock STRONGLY influenced my sermon on Sunday.... almost to the line where I waiver on how best to credit sources. It was such a strong picture for me that it helped explain what Paul meant when he said, "You know what time it is..."

I've previously used the three-volume "Texts for Preaching" set (Brueggeman et al)... it was nice... but this is so much more in depth.

I had only bought the first volume at this point just to make sure that I would benefit from it. I will be buying the rest. I greatly appreciate how it's written, the brevity, the depth, and the four perspectives. I do find it interesting how they are ordered (Theological-Pastoral-Exegetical-Homiletical). If I had put it together, I would have done it (Exegetical-Theological-Pastoral-Homiletical). I've begun reading them in that order.
I really like NT Wright's three-book set, "Twelve Months of Sundays." There's but a page for each week, but I find it's a good jumpstart.

I tried downloading the book with Google's new Google Books app (that works with their just-announced eBookstore)... and apparently, even though you get to both through books.google.com, this book isn't available (free or otherwise) through their eBookstore. Just a little bit confusing...
