    DSL Question

This thing has never been all that fast, but faster than dial-up. However, keep getting kicked off the last few months, as if they signed up so many more people on DSL that those w/slower computers get kicked off. This will be hour or two at a time, too.

U-Verse people, that I've never bothered to talk to [don't do cable/pay TV here, ever], insist that the only way to fix it is to have U-Verse installed ~~ said that would be "new fiber optic wiring from them to the house" ~~ and then to cancel it, having those new lines to help speed it up and keep it from getting kicked off 2-3x/day for too-long of time periods.

THEN I got to wondering ... as they also said some "new computer chip" would be installed in the box outside, too. Well, looks like there's already some "new box" out there since the DSL, so why would this not have already been put in there then, this "new chip"?

AND then I got to reading about it on the i'net, and see that noise can slow it down. What if all the phones in the house have a filter other than one? Would that suddenly slow it down way too much, so that it gets kicked off ~~ but why not when first in here? You see, the basement phone is the old wired-to-the-wall thing, NO JACK, so one cannot plug a filter into that phone, b/c there's no PLUG !!

Do I need someone to start there ... putting that phone on a jack so it CAN have a filter plugged into it ... or ???

Anyway, are those U-Verse folks "all wet" and using this problem as a selling point, or ... ??

When I had DSL everytime I started my treadmill it would cause a momentary disruption in the DSL signal. Also the 2wire modem wouldn't hold speed without rebooting every other day so I used my older westell modem in bridge mode with my airport extreme router and that corrected the speed issues I had. U-verse solved all those issues and you can purchase higher bandwidth rates then standard DSL. So if the pricing is about the same U-Verse is much improved over the older ADSL offerings. When they installed U-Verse they ran a new line from the outside of the house to where I wanted the RG/Modem installed which bypasses all the phone wiring in your house. (no noise). Then then loop the phone service back through that same line to the outside of your home which enables the phone jacks to be used with standard phones and no filter is required. (assuming one also gets the U-verse phone service) I didn't get the video TV service because I like Dish Network and it was less expensive for the offerings I wanted to purchase. So both my phone and Internet service is with At&t U-Verse.

    Re: DSL Question

Well, after this "special" they want $35 for the lowest DSL (oops, not $35, but is now $38-39). I won't even be keeping $38-39 DSL after the $15 is over, but not sure if you're saying that it works like this because you're still hooked up, or not. Cannot pay the $100+(!!!) they say the DSL, TV, house phone is in a U-verse "bundle." NO WAY!

So, would these wires be put there, then defunct, anyway, if you turn off the U-Verse TV, so that you'd end up w/the same weird DSL problems b/c of having unhooked the U-Verse, tho' they supposedly put some new wiring to the OUTside of the house from wherever?

Not sure exactly what you're saying here. BUT anyway, if this is what they tell people to get them to get U-Verse, figuring they'll "like it enough" to keep it, after they've told us it'll help the DSL, even if cancelled ... it's not going to happen, keeping it. Waaay too much. There's more than enough TV on regular TV without paying for it, so ........ ???

    Thank you.

Oh, yeah ... also, before the two-wire they bro't in here that finally worked, there were a couple of other defunct (Motorola) tiny ones that were worth nothing. This third one seemed halfway OK ... until recent months. Do they only last a few months working well, and then ... ?? Come to think of it, what I've done a few times is to unplug the doggone thing, plug it back in, and then it works ... UNLESS it's around lunchtime ... or "after work" time ... or Saturday/Sunday afternoons.

Seems there maybe is something to this too many people on that kick the slower ones off, or something???

    Re: DSL Question

What's going on, anyway [Scott, or anyone?], that I had to go to the "forum" list, click on this forum, then click on this thread, and then could finally post this?

Reloaded the page to see if there were answers, it said Randy had answered, so I then wrote mine. THEN a message said I'd have to "reload the page as 'the token(?)' [what token?] has expired."

Reloaded the page, after a copy/paste so I'd not have to retype it AGAIN, and it ignored the reload and told me again that "the token has expired." Something new to this v-forum ... tokens of time in which to post ... and then it's got a quirk ignoring a reloaded page, saying agian the token has expired?

    Thank you.

    Re: DSL Question

Each phone physically plugged into a phone jack should have a filter. I doubt that's the cause of your issues. All you can do is call their support line and voice your issues. Maybe they can send someone to your house? As far as pricing I can't help with what they want to charge for service. $15.00 does sound like a great deal. Sorry you can keep that rate. All you can do is shop around for the best rates in your area.

    Re: DSL Question

Yeah, I know no one here can do anything re the rates. Sad, huh? Guess we'll end up back on dial-up and not be able to do videos, etc.

Thanks for all your help, tho'.
