If you were buying a new camera, would you purchase the same make?

If all of your equipment was stolen and you had the opportunity to purchase whatever you wanted.... would you buy from the same company? or would you switch to another brand?

I'm curious to hear if everyone is happy with their equipment choices.

Would you buy the same lenses?

Yes. I would stick with Nikon. I might use the opportunity to step up to a D3.

My primary issue right now is weight. I have been carrying my D300 when I hike. It gets pretty heavy. On my last hike, I left the D300 in my luggage on the South Rim and took only my Panisonic Lumix. The wind was blowing like crazy and blew sand into the focus gears. The Lumix stopped working just when I was at the point of taking some spectacular photos. I have not decided what I will do on our next Grand Canyon hike.

Very good question. I think I'd buy the same camera again, only, the D300s because the D300 isn't available anymore. Reasons:
    • The differences at my level (top APC-C level) are minimal
    • I'm familiar with the Nikon and like how it operates, so I prefer to stick with it. Saves me getting used to a totally new camera. I never know what to do when using a Canon.
    • I see no reason to justify the purchase of a full frame FOR ME.
    • I like the ruggedness of the D300.

    Lenses:
    Right now I have a Nikon 18-200, Nikon 50mm 1.8, Sigma 10-20mm.

I probably would buy the same ones again, perhaps check for the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 but then again I don't use it all that often. I would check if a Nikon 10mm - 24mm would justify the extra money.
I'd also buy the Gorillapod again, and the Nikon SB600 flash.

But the D3 is even heavier than the D300. And you will have to buy other lenses too.

I would stick with the Canon camera systems without hesitation. I would try to upgrade to a more professional model with higher ISO's and less noise for low level lighting. I would also purchase a much faster short lens and a good fast zoom (cha-ching!). Low light is killing me!!! :-)

I would stick with my Canon. Maybe upgrade so that I can record in HD but other than that I like my camera.

Re: If you were buying a new camera, would you purchase the same make?

So this past 4 days I have been using a friend's Cannon Rebel. I have to admit that I like the Cannon better than the Nikon, so far. However, I still like the Fuji -- I like the way it feels in my hands, the way I don't have to change lenses but can still get the same zoom that my friend's 75-300 mm lens has (almost, just a tiny difference). Just about the only thing I like about the Cannon over the Fuji is the shallow depth of field that I can achieve with the Cannon that I can't consistently achieve with my Fuji.

I definitely dislike having to change lenses in mid-shoot during the graduation ceremony-- I used the long lens for the shots that I had to zoom in on, but that lens didn't work for the family shots afterward. Actually, I ended up using my Fuji for most of the family shots. Too much of a pain to carry around the camera bag, change lenses, etc. I just can't get used to that....

It has been nice to be able to try out the camera, though. Today we're going to hike at Saguaro National Park for a little bit and have dinner there this evening, so I'll be taking the Cannon to play with a little there, too. Just getting a good feel of the camera. This particular one is very user friendly as far as changing the settings, etc. I like that aspect of it.

Oh well, we'll see. I'm shopping now for a new camera......so it remains to be seen which one I end up with. I'm much more picky this time, so it may take a while. The budget and the features have to balance out!!! ha ha
