    Midnight in Paris (2011)

My favorite movie of 2011 is Midnight in Paris, directed by Woody Allen. I'm generally not a fan of romantic comedies, but this film includes Paris, time travel, and many art and literature references...some of my favorite things. Midnight in Paris is out on DVD December 20th and I'm hoping to find a copy under our tree.

We rented this one from RedBox. I hadn't heard of it at all but Ryan told me it was about Paris during the time of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, etc... As an English teacher, I figured it would be an interesting watch. There were some parts I thought were a bit predictable and the director certainly expects you to already have a background understanding of various artists and authors. For someone who doesn't read the classics or go to art museums, it may not be interesting simply because much of the plot is driven by the lives of these people - without giving you the background in the movie itself. The message at the end is interesting: don't yearn for times gone by, but rather, find a way to embrace your current time and situation. There were some mildly funny parts towards the end, but mostly a drama driven film.

I thought it was good, if unambitious. Lots of people are putting it on their ten best lists, but I think that's more because Woody Allen has been making terrible movies for the last fifteen years and this one was not terrible. I enjoyed it. Owen Wilson plays Woody Allen better than he does. There was a simple, if predictable, lesson at the end - but all in all a fun movie.
    ...just my $.02.
