At one point, I considered posting in the current events forum just so that I could beat him to the 4 K club...but then sanity prevailed!

Breaking News: Shea Zellweger is actively trying to switch to a typewriter for all major writing projects. If all goes as planned, someone else will christen the 5k club. I never liked 5ks anyway. Too sweaty.

    A typewriter eh? Really?

Where are you going to find one of those?

Hope you have the finger strength for it. Those keys can get real hard to press.

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

most office supply stores (and Amazon) still have them. But they're electric now... it's sort of like power steering- the machine does the work for you. Also, while I'm handing out tips, you might want to be aware that they have self-cranking pencil-sharpeners availa- crap! you just made me up my post count. You crafty devil.

If you can get one, I'd recommend an IBM with a ball head. Terrific machines.

Ahhh........thank you so much for the helpful tip young feller. I must tell you that this old fossil actually owns an electric pencil sharpener! Currently it resides atop my electric paper shredder.

I will admit that, back in the day, we had mechanical typewriters exclusively when I took typing in school. Sitting proud at the center desk in the front row was a "special" typewriter with blank keys, we were all tested using it.

Selectric III, or Wheelwriter? I can't seem to find the former, and the latter is relatively expensive.
I was actually looking at the Brother SX-4000. Looks like as long as I'm not constantly moving it around, it's a pretty solid machine.

We had to put rubber keyboard covers on our computers for typing class. I could type without looking, but I couldn't fill out the diagram of the keyboard (still can't), so my teacher was convinced I was finding a way to cheat.

Yeah, the Selectric. They were really good.

Gotta hate it when that happens!

Myself, I actually did cheat with the blessing of the teacher. I was pretty good at typewriter maintenance and repair, so I made sure that everything was operational and up to snuff and he "paid" me with the "A" that I would have gotten should I have actually taken the class.

I found out later on in life that touch typing skills come free with computer usage!

My dad's typing has improved the more he ventures out into computer land.

My own skills have improved but only partially so. I can type without looking at my fingers but must be looking at the screen. I stink at looking at a book and trying to type what I see without the instant feedback on whether or not I've typed correctly.

Hope you get your wish Shea. Although, having had to do all my papers on typewriter, I gotta admit that I can't understand why anyone would want to torture themselves thusly. I understand your reasons, just that I can still feel the scars of doing papers on typewriters.

About ten years back I found myself buying reading glasses for no particular reason. Since then I have learned the fine art of writing without being able to see what I'm writing. Touch typing practice can come in handy!

Well, I have nearly 12 years' experience (Jr High thru Grad School) doing all my major writing on a computer (or occasionally by hand- blech), so there are no typewriter scars in my closet. I've played around with the model I'm getting enough to know that the keyboard has the feel of a standard computer keyboard, and I've long since learned how to type without having to watch the monitor, so it won't take very much adjusting. Plus, this'll just be for first drafts. Once those are written, I'll edit them on the computer- I'm not a masochist

Yours are the first posts I've encountered here that say "posted via mobile device" on the bottom near the thanks and laughing icons.

Interesting. I hadn't noticed that before. I don't know if I've posted from my iPad or not. I wonder if it would show up like that if I did. Maybe I'll try it in a bit.

I've posted from my phone and iPad a bunch of times but no "neat" icon, that would identify me as mobile.

Scott mentioned something about posting from some sort of lightweight format or view or something like that. I've looked around and can't find it. I've actually loaded the vbulletin app on my phone and iPad, but there doesn't appear to be a way to get to naznet from there.

Betty, not a phone. Haven't ever had inet on phone. A cheaper tiny tab from Big Lots ($89) . But not sure how well I can look 4puters on here, not opening more than 1 pg at once.

Jim, go as far down on this page as U can, there is a drop-down list on left. Bottom option is lightweight.

Typing on screen kybdbugs me! So much slower than reg kybd.

    Re: Breaking News

I took typing in high school and college. In high school we had a remington manual typewriter. In college, we had the IBM selectric. (loved it). In the late 70's at my work I was introduced to the CRT terminal for keying inventory. When I went to work for EDS in 1982 we had the IBM selectric and when we received the old motorola displaywrite 4 word processor. We also had a word processor machine that was enormous and took up an entire cubicle. I felt fortunate to be trained to back up the word processing opertator. I now can type on my phone. I have a laptop that I can carry around with me. I wish I had an ipad but maybe later. Technology changes daily and we need to change with it.

I am now third top poster by one post. If Ben AND Ryan stopped for a few more days I could have a comfortable lead. I doubt that I'll ever catch up with Jim C or Shea though.
