    Finding an IP address

I need some advice from some of you who know more about ip addresses than I do.

My security cameras ane connected to my router in Gig Harbor. Because of the ice storm, the electricty at our home was out long enough that the ups ran out of power. The result was the cable modem and router went off line. They have now rebooted, but my internet service provider assigned a different ip address.

I know the cable modem and router are back up because my ADT home security system works through the same router. It is working just fine.

I know how to get the ip address from the other side of the router, but not this side. Do any of you have an idea of how I can get the new ip address?

I assume your in AZ? If thats the case you will have to call your service provider to obtain the new ip address. (assuming it did in fact change) Do you sign into the router from the internet? If so maybe the password or other settings (not the ip address) were reset to default because of the prolonged power outage?

Thanks, Randy. I guess it was a false alarm. The power went down again and when it came back up, the security cameras started working again. I have no way of knowing what the problem was.

I have both the cable modem and the router on a uninteruptable power supply, so it was probably the cable that was down. In any case, the system has now been restored.

There are actually a lot of different ways to do this but one particular one I like is to use OpenDNS. If your'e not using it, you should consider it and it allows you to get free filtering. They have a program that automatically updates their site with your IP address whenever it changes. So, if your power goes out, when it reconnects, it will update OpenDNS with your new IP address at which point you can login from AZ and see the IP address of your 'home' location.

Thanks, Zach. I use dyn.dns which is similar to OpneDNS. I didn't think it was working this week. I have figured out that my problem is with Comcast, not the power company. I had assumed that the power was going on and off. PenLight's web site says that the power in our area is on, so I now believe it is the cable that is out. Pamela will go check it out for us today.

Actually forget my idea because that would only work if your computer would restart automatically every time. The best solution is to get a business account which allows you to purchase a static IP. Comcast has a 12Mbps down / 2Mbps up for $59.95 + a static IP for $14.95. It's expensive but unless you can keep your computer on to update, there aren't a lot of solutions.

Thanks, Zach. I am not willing to pay the higher rate for Comcast when I am gone for 6 months of the year.

I am fortunate to have a son living in the area. He can go to my home and reset the modem and router.
Thanks Zach Wingo - "thanks" for this post
