I have vague memories of scenes with my birth family, everyone sitting in the same room with a book or magazine or newspaper. One person would say, "It says here that ..." and conversation would happen for a while among those not so caught up in Neverland as to be oblivious to it. If it went on long enough, even the Neverland people would get pulled into it. Then there would be comfortable silence for a bit as the Neverland people drifted back off to their pirate fights until someone else started, "Hmm... this is interesting ...".

In my mind, reading material augmented both the conversation and the silences. Is there a chance I'm not alone in my desire for discussing more than what's already in our heads? I guess the ubiquitous television feed provides that sort of input for many. I'm not nearly so interested in that sort of setting. The squawking box disturbs my reading and, unlike the voices of my family, is simply irritating. I prefer the ebb and flow of conversation and silences filled with reading.

Otter means sanguine or I [in DISC profile]. But what is WOO?

That personality profile is one I haven't done yet. I tend to be a personality profile geek.

Unless you're part of a special deal (if there are any), you have to buy the book to take the test. Each book comes with a code for the online test that can be used only once.

Being also a personality profile geek (although I don't know what type of animal or dog I am), I bought the book after it was previously discussed on NazNet, took the test, then read the descriptions to figure out for myself what the answers should have been.

I don't know why, particularly since there's no access to the methods of analysis or even the test questions after the one time through, but from my perspective that test returned the biggest misdiagnosis of my strengths of any I've taken. Plus the authors seem to be carrying a lot of baggage from having had people focus in on their weaknesses and try to fix them rather than finding their strengths. As someone with little grief in that area, I couldn't really identify. I don't recall anyone taking enough personal interest in me to try to "fix" my weaknesses. Rather, people generally recruit me for the strengths they can easily identify, overlook the ones that are less obvious to them, and move past me to the next person in line in areas where my weaknesses make me of no use to them.

I have sometimes mourned my personal lack of mentors but maybe not having someone focus in on the weak areas of one's personality and try to fix them can actually be a good thing.

Thanks for the info - I'll scratch that off my bucket list.

    Re: Introvert/Extrovert

The Clifton Strengths finder was very accurate for me; but then, I got the whole list of 34, not just the top 5.

If you attempt to use it on your own, you will get less benefit out of it than if it is used as part of an organization.

But wouldn't the best mentor be the one who helps one fully develop their strengths, anyway, rather than focusing on one's weaknesses, Marsha?

Yes, that would be good. Apparently, however, there are a lot of scarred people around whose mentors have been intent on identifying weaknesses and encouraging them to work on those areas rather than developing strengths. With no one paying that much attention to me, I managed to stumble onto the idea of leveraging my strengths rather than worrying so much about my weaknesses.

At least that's true of my formative years. As a young adult, I didn't do so well because so many of the expectations aimed toward me as a young wife and mother landed square in my areas of weakness. I'm not sure having someone remind me of my strengths at that time would have countered the sense of failure I felt in my lack of domestic and nurturing skills. I remember one particular rant about how unfair it was that my sewing skills, once so valued among women, were superfluous in that day of ready-made clothing but cooking was still an essential skill. Now I look at all the ready-made foods in grocery stores and even at those dreaded pitch-in dinners at church and realize I was just ahead of my time.
