    "Big Un"

Last night at my community education class one of my students brought along a guest. It turned out to be one of Boise State's newest recruits or "studs" as all Bronco recruits are called in the local sports media. He is a "big un" defensive tackle at 6' 8" and 390 lbs.

He's going to need to shed a lot of that weight, probably down to something close to 350, if he wants to compete at a high level and have any chance at an NFL career. Big 'un indeed. With a good workout regimen, and a good work ethic, he has the possibility of becoming a 6'8'', 350lb force to be reckoned with.

That's not really my contention. Instead, at 380, it just isn't likely that he is - or can be - fast enough to carry out his duties at an NFL level on the line.

T - Block 260-280lb quick edge pass rushers
G - pull on power plays to the far side in the run game
C - Explode deep into the second level in the run game

With size you give up speed. Dontari Poe was thought to need to lose 20lbs, not because he wasn't strong, but because he wasn't thought to be fast enough. He proved at the combine that he's a freak of nature and is more than fast enough. However, odds are that this is not the case for the large majority of other people.

There are no issues with this guy being chubby, . However, he's still thoguht to be too heavy to be fast enough to play his safety position effectively.

I suspect this kid will need to get down to around 350 if he wants a shot at an NFL career.
