    :::::sigh::::::::

We just don't have enough controversy on the Photography board.

    LOL

Wouldn't you like, for once, to come to NazNet and click the "What's New" button, and find Photography forum posts at the top of the list?????

I mean, the other forum hosts are beginning to smirk at us......we have no controversy here......sad, isn't it?

    LOL

(can you tell that I am avoiding work today????)

Well, I think it's just silly that you say that and you ought to be ashamed of yourself. I also think you're a wild eye'd conservative photographer who doesn't know the meaning of 35mm or focal length.

There - that's the best I can do to stir things up for you.

    Dana,

    Be nice...

I like that our board has no problems...

Our big concern is usually based on equipment preference...

    Off topic here, but ...

When I was a student, I named my old VW bus "flattery" because she got me nowhere.

    Alrighty then. Carry on.
Wherever I am, God is, and all is well.

I read this posting because I like the graphical way of expressing :::::sigh:::::: very effective and i had not seen it before.

Other than that, why waste time taking pictures??

There goes Marian always stirring it up! I quit photography when mama took my Kodachrome away. No Film = No Fun .

    Scott,

You can still shoot film...maybe not Kodachrome anymore... If you had ever toured the facility that processed Kodachrome you'd have understood why they stopped processing it. Talk about a toxic process!

    Dana,

Just shoot me a message of the equipment requirements and I'll be happy to assist!

Since Dave asked me about equipment I've had a few others inquire about camera setups too (none here, but people that are local). I even went with one person to a camera shop so they could touch and feel... before they spent their money.

I base recommendation to almost anyone:

Purchase the least expensive body that will do everything you need, then spend the majority of the money on the best lenses you can afford!

My reasoning for this? It's quite simple.... Once you purchase a camera system you are far more likely to upgrade bodies more often than your lenses and it's the quality of the glass that affects your picture quality most. (Camera bodies are updated quickly and the quality that the sensor can capture gets better, but without high quality lenses.... you'll never see the difference.) (That's why I hardly ever recommend the purchase of the "kit" lens...).

    Jon

......Jonathan, you had already sent me good recommendations for camera and accessories --

I didn't get exactly what you suggested, but close.......I ordered my camera, and it should be here on Tuesday.......the extra lenses will have to wait a little while.....but I did get the kit lens and one other one.

    Stay tuned........

Happy to oblige, Dana, we aim to please

That said, I am working thru a very gnarly process of getting a contract closed with a commercial customer for whom our company will digitize into tiffs and jpegs 10,000s of historical documents, manuscripts and other ephemera on site at the source library. "Geez, sign the contract already will ya???" So I am glad we have people who LOVE to take pictures all day long.

Wow, Marian, that sounds so interesting!! About how long would a project like that take your company to complete?

Dana, on a project like this, for about 70,000 pages, we estimate 2 technicians producing 2000 images per day total (not each), working 7.5 hours/day (not all of that is pure imaging) will take about 5 months. Others will do much of the prep work, such as removing clips, staples, bindings ( where possible), and laying flat, for the most part.
We do use 180 and 120 cradles, the latter mostly for fragile bound items.

Equipment is determined but I don't have the specifics. We use area array cameras, and Nikon is a favored brand. We handle everything manually, no auto page turners.
Thanks Dana Grant - "thanks" for this post
