During Oliver Cromwell's service as Prime Minister of England it was found out that the resources for silver to make coins was running low so a survey was made to locate any available source. The answer was in the statuary of the saints in the cathredals. His response was "Let's melt down the saints and get them into distribution." An interesting way of expressing the need for the layman to get out and spread the gospel and not leave it up to pastoral staffs.

I've knwn some "saints" down through the years that would be very hard to "Melt"
Interesting that illustrations can be used to express different principles. My first thought was that it might be used to address the "this perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor." I hadn't the benefit of the context of the preacher's message, however.
Is this where the expression "silver saints" comes from?
