    New DS in Northwest Indiana

Our DS for the past 17 years (I think), Dr. Lee Woolery, is retiring. We'll have to elect a new one at our assembly that meets April 29 - May 1. I don't believe that our district advisory board will be proposing any names.

Anybody want to recommend someone? I was thinking of voting for Scott Sherwood.

Rocky Mountain District will also be electing a new D.S. this year. Our Assembly is at the end of June. Our current D.S., Larry Coen, has been serving for around 20 years.

We've had a couple of surveys go out over the last year, and there is currently a task force working with Dr. Porter on the process. There have been eight locations set up across Wyoming and Montana last weekend and this weekend for pastors and laypeople to gather and go over some of the survey data that was collected to help give direction to the task force on what we think we need in a new D.S.
So when the gospel is diminished to a question of whether or not a person will “get into heaven,” that reduces the good news to a ticket, a way to get past the bouncer and into the club. The good news is better than that.

We went through a similar process. Apparently it led to a profile of what we're looking for, but no names of anyone who fit the profile.

That is an interesting result. Not sure what to make of it.

Well, all I can say is that if I had my "druthers", I "'druther" not relocate to to Northwest Indiana at this time.

I remember that Scott Cundiff got a couple of votes here in the Southwestern Ohio District when our previous D.S. retired. For the record, while it would have been cool to have cott up here, I'm very happy that we've now had Dr. Doug VanNest as our D.S. since that election.

Well, from the RMD Kyle Boger and I are the only regular naznetters, and neither of us are ordained yet. (I think there are at least a couple of lurkers, too.) So do any of you want to move to Wyoming or Montana?

Hey, this thread is about the unspeakably lovely and fabulously welcoming Northwest Indiana district, with our gorgeous sand dunes on Lake Michigan, our never-ending fields of corn and wind turbines, and our remarkably short driving distances to Chicago and most General Assemblies! Start your own thread if you want to recruit someone for your boring old mountains and big sky!

Well, I'm not even remotely qualified to be a DS, but I am a partner in a group that has some land in Valpo. So there's that Rich.

I'm sure Scott has made some mistakes, but I don't think he's done anything bad enough to merit having to serve as DS.

If so, it was probably my high water mark in my ministry as well. I was a bit embarrassed to see a vote for me on the same ballot. I later found out that my then-teenage son, who was a District Assembly delegate by virtue of hie being the NYI President, voted for me.

But Scott, I believe your vote total on that first ballot surpassed mine by 100%, and I believe you got a couple of votes on a later ballot or two and I (thankfully) didn't get any more. So you're way up there compared to me...

Well, IMO, the views around Cody are much more inspiring if you're headed west towad Yellowstone. To the east, it's as flat as a barn floor 'til you get to the Big Horn Mtns, a range that absolutely wasn't on my radar until I wound up at the base of them.

Jim, I am very much a flatlander and that's probably why I totally LOVE the mountains!

Isn't Sugar Creek around Turkey Run and Shades state parks on your district? It's almost like a taste of southern Indiana!

Hope your assembly is a blessing and the election goes well! Will yours be the third new DS in Indiana in three years?

Sorry, Rich! Looks like I really did send your thread in a different direction . . .

In Wyoming and Montana, it really does depend on the parts of the states being considered. The eastern half of Montana is all flat. Those of us in western Montana call that "East Dakota". Wyoming is similar. Along the east and south it is pretty lacking in mountains, but once you get off the freeways there are plenty to be found. Of course, all the plains of the two states are still high plains, at at least 3000 feet elevation. Nothing like the lowlands of the midwest and places like Indiana.

Speaking of Indiana, how about that Northwest Indiana D.S. election coming up next week . . .

There used to be an airplane graveyard around Buffalo in the intermountain desert. That was kind of cool.

Sugar Creek runs through Crawfordsville, which may be the southernmost church on our district... but I think Shades would be too far south. I'm not sure. (Noblesville may be a bit further south, but it's so far into the southeast corner of the district, it's hard to say.)

I don't remember when the other districts in Indiana last elected their DS's. Your memory may be better than mine on that front.

    It was a joke, Jim.

My wife and I drove from Valparaiso to see friends in Twin Falls, Idaho, and Kennewick, Washington, back in 2005. We stopped at Yellowstone, along with a few other points of interest along the way (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, etc.). The whole trip was beautiful. And we love the mountains.

That said, we love living here in northwest Indiana. It's close to family, close to major cities, close to the lake,... and we can always go see mountains on vacation.

So.... does anybody want to recommend someone for us to consider for DS?

BTW, one of the first things people started saying when the process began was that we wanted to bring someone in from outside the district... probably to avoid any of the goofiness that comes when people on the district get considered for it and then not elected. The only campaigning I've heard from people on the district is a couple of prominent pastors telling others to please not vote for them.

We would also love to find someone who has pastored and led well churches of various sizes. Our district has churches of 20, churches over 1,000 (three of them), and churches of all sizes in between. So it would help if we find someone who has personal experience leading churches of various sizes.

Just tossing it out there... If you think of anyone....

Sorry, I hadn't refreshed to see your question. I answered part of it in my post above. They haven't publicized it beyond the advisory board, I don't think. (I heard about it from one of the members.) We'll hear the rest at assembly.

It would also be helpful if the new DS had some experience with non-traditional ministry type - mission stations, bi-vocational pastors etc - since we have a few of those on the district, myself included

And just to make the CNers squirm, he or she should have a passion for prayer labyrinths.

Garry Pate was elected as SWID DS in 2010.

Ron Blake was elected as Indy DS in 2011.

Several years ago, with both DS's nearing retirement, merger was discussed but didn't happen. I guess NW Indiana didn't get in on that discussion.

And now in 2012, NWIN will elect... someone.

I don't think we were invited.

There were some brief discussions on our advisory board a couple years ago about the idea of merging with another district, but it didn't go anywhere. As far as I know, we never actually reached out to any neighboring districts to discuss it. I don't think they were able to find any reason to merge. What's the benefit?

If someone in the future decides to go forward with a merger, we'd probably end up talking to Northeast Indiana and Chicago Central, splitting our district according to the time zones. Though it might make sense for some of our southern churches to join with SW or Indy. A couple of them are right near the district boundaries.

I attended one of the taskforce meetings for RMD this Saturday. Basically same process as determining what type of Pastor you want, but done across the district. A difficult task for us is to find a person that the skills we want. We would like someone who has some experience running a larger organization and is familiar with wide open spaces. Just not sure that pastoring a church with less than 300 gives you the management skills you need to build the teams we will need to move forward. Most of our churches are less than 150 and have bivocational pastors who have no staff members. I brought that up in our meeting and most were quite surprised by the thought since it was assumed the DS would come from within district. But I think at least within my group it got them to look at our list and to start realizing that no one on the district meet our wish list. Apparently Jesus isn't ordained on our district either!

Dr. David Roland was elected NEI DS in June of 2002, and we hope to keep him a good long time.

BTW, our previous DS, Tom Bailey, died just a month before, so it will be 10 years this May since he passed. Because our church year has been moved up a month, for the first time our Dist. Assembly takes place on the anniversary of his death, May 31.

My uncle, George Franklin was NWIndiana District superintendent from about 1945-1953 that is how I had the opportunity to spend many fine hours in Valpo.

BTW Pastor Rich, how is Portage doing? My dad and mother pastored at the Garyton church on Monier Rd. I have checked the address and there is still a sanctuary there but evidently another group has it now. The Garyton Nazarene church was a forerunner of Portage. I went to Portage Jr. Sr. High School in 7th and 8th grades.

    that

I am not sure that I agree with this. I know several pastors who are strong administrators and would be great team builders who have never pastored a church with a staff.
