The Greatest Song ever sung in History Ps: 22 - Youtube Lenard Sweet speaking to Anglican Mission 2011

I have learned something new today and I am Uplifted !

"My God My God why have you forsaken me?" It had never occurred to me until I heard Len Sweets message today that Jesus sang songs - And that on the cross He was singing My God My God...Psalm 22. His song is not one of despair and abandonment but one of VICTORY. Wow I have never had read or sung the complete Psalm before but I am pretty sure that Christ knew it and knew it well. How had I missed this?

check out this portion of Sweet's message here in Part 4: but you will want to hear the whole message beginning part 1.
"And as we pass the collection plate, please give as if the person next to you was watching."

Yea and Amen! It has been ten years or so since, I've embraced this, everything makes so much sense in light of this. Greatest song ever! He has done it!

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

Found that song he mentioned at the end of this video. Do not recall ever hearing it before:

Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.

Thanks Gina. I had been looking for that song. This looks like a Coke Advertisement rendition. Anyway for those casual thread readers this IS NOT the greatest song ever sung. That is referring to Psalm 22. The song Christ sung on the cross..one not of abandonment but of victory !

check out the Youtube of Sweets message.

The argument against this interpretation is that were Jesus singing it as appropriate to the Jews (as it is traditional) he would have sung it in Hebrew.

Instead, it's in Aramaic. Thus, it may not mean quite what we want it to.

Perhaps. My take is that we don't know as much about which language was spoken where and by whom as we think we know. He did begin this psalm in Aramaic, yet he ended in Greek with tetelestai.

Interesting point one which I will have to study a bit more to understand what relevance it has that Christ spoke in Aramaic. Seem to me it was recorded by John and Luke and they surely would have understood the context of his words when translating into Greek. Perhaps He didn't want to speak the song in the traditional "religious" way of the Hebrews as it could lessen its meaning ... you know something said of ritual.
I am still wondering how this has escaped me all these years. I remember many years back a young Muslim scholar (and friend) in Malaysia Asking me why Christ (if he were God's son would) could cry out shamefully "My God My God why have you forsaken me" . My only answer was that because Christ was fully man and at the time God had indeed left him as punishment for our sin. I wish I had known about Ps 22 then.

It is the reference to Aramaic that makes the "song" theory compelling for me. While he could have said "my God, My God, why has though forsaken me" (in greek of course) Instead he chose to speak "eloi, eloi, lama, sabachthani" I think that it is significant that he was not understood by those around him. I've not done the research, but I believe his use of Aramaic would have been proper should his intent be to reference the Psalm.

Yes, and we do hope that y'all know I know that, too.

Anyway, awhile back someone mentioned Leonard Sweet. Interesting character.
