    Congratulations Rev. Ryan Scott

Our own Ryan Scott was ordained at the Philadelphia District Assembly this evening. Of course, his very supportive - and very pregnant - partner Katelynn was with him. It was a moving moment when his dad, Rev. Alan Scott, prayed the ordination prayer and gave him his credentials. Also present were his in-laws, Katelynn's parents Rev. Lynn and Rev. David Shaw.

    Re: Congratulations Rev. Ryan Scott

Congratulations Ryan. I know this is politically incorrect but welcome to the club.

I say that because among the many things that ordination means, one of them is that you have completed a very long and demanding journey. I know in your case you choose a path that included a great deal of education which inherently delays the process.

It also means that you have, despite the intentional barriers, joined a religious order. This is something about which evangelicals have almost no understanding. Put you do. You know that when you were ordained, we asked and you agreed, to sacrifice yourself for the church in all kinds of big and small ways. Sadly, most of these will not be recognized by those you serve. You will do it gladly, if not without some pain and the occasional frustration that the very ones you sacrifice for will sometimes bite you.

So welcome to the club. It is sometimes a hard life, but it can also be a great life. You are in many ways at the beginning of your journey. My prayer is that God will bless you greatly in it. As you pour out your life for Him and his church may you find deep soul satisfaction and great joy. I can't imagine myself doing anything else and I am constantly amazed that God would place in my hands this sacred trust.

Well, I didn't know it was politically incorrect, but about 50% of the elders who greeted me last night said the same thing.

Always remember the first rule of Elders Club: "Never talk about Elders Club."
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us wthout end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

I think there has been sensitivity about the role of clergy. There are many that are uncomfortable with a group of people who might claim to know more about the Bible or theology or who may be uniquely empowered in the church. We see some of that on Naznet. Clergy in any way alluding to such a special place is regarded in a pretty negative way among some.

But to talk about this in a thread meant to congratulate Ryan would seem pretty bad taste to me.

Sorry, didn't mean to be in bad taste.

I think Ryan represents the best and brightest among clergy. If there is a case study for why the ordained should indeed be regarded as experts, his ordination makes the case.

You weren't. I wanted to kill such talk here before we'd go down that road. And I agree with what you wrote.

Congratulations to our own Susan Unger, who at the same service received her first District License! ;o ) It was fun to bump into a fellow NazNetter - even though we didn't think to take the "required" group photo.

Had to click the funny button instead of thanks b/c I could see Ryan & Katelynn in crowns (from BK, perhaps? ) when you mentioned a dynasty.

Marian - my parents they are! They got married at 18 and 19 and had me 4 years later. I'm 27, so I'll let you do your own math to figure out how old they are... I'm fourth generation Nazarene and working on delivering the fifth generation some time soon.
