Does anyone know anyone who goes to Grace Church of the Nazarene in Memphis???
My mostly non-church-going sister and brother-in-law just moved to memphis and visited there today. Just curious.

I think you have to be contentious to get a quick answer. Try baiting somebody. (Just kidding)

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.
Garrison Keillor
Visited there a few years ago, but that's the best I can do.

we drove across the State of TN - in Feb '83, on our way from FL to IL, and that took a lot of grace.
Does that help?

Dana -
As soon as I read your first post I looked up Memphis Grace on Google (after all, the Scriptures clearly tell us: If anyone lack wisdom, let him Google......) - seems to have a pretty comprehensive ministry.
Been through Memphis several times - will be spending a few days there this fall (after visiting some of the northern Mississippi 'blues country'. Between visiting Beal Street (sp?) and Graceland I doubt I'll be able to get to Grace.
Naznetter Monte Butts lives in Memphis.
Memphis is one of my favorite cities. Grace church is actually in Shelbyville if I'm not mistaken, which is the "white-flight" suburban area of Memphis. Pastor Mark Lancaster has been there quite a long time, maybe close to 20 years. His parents are JW and Retha Lancaster, retired DS and NMI President, respectively, of first the Mississippi and then the Houston District. Dave M and Scott C know the Lancasters very well I'm sure, and can probably tell you more about the church.
The Church of the Nazarene in Memphis is one of our best success stories of work among African Americans in the South. The church planting movement took off there like it has with Spanish work in many Texas cities.
When you visit your sister there, go eat ribs at The Rendevous, or stay at the famous Peabody Hotel and watch the ducks walk through the lobby.

David -- I have done both of those things!! Also, that's where they live, Shelbyville.
We'll be visiting them next week, actually, but we won't be there over a Sunday. That's too bad.
Thanks for the info, though!!

Memphis Grace is not in Shelbyville, Tn. Shelbyville, Tn. is close to Columbia, Lewisburg, in middle Tn.
Memphis Grace was at one time located at 8979 Shelby Dr. Memphis, Tn.38125
Shelbyville is noted for their Tennessee Walking horses.
Memphis has 10 or more good Naz. churches, I am sure any one would welcome you.
hope this helps. gerald

I STAND CORRECTED -- it is not Shelbyville where my sister & Brother-in-law live, it is Collierville.....SORRY ABOUT THAT!!
They've only recently moved there, so I guess I got my little "villes" mixed up........
Collierville. Collierville.
Must remember that.

Dana, I am not familiar with Memphis Grace but I would suggest they check out Calvary which is the church that we all went to a few years ago where Lynn Holmes is the pastor.
Marsha Gupton
I'm not sure how close that is to Collierville, but I will let them know about it -- I was trying to think which one it is and wondering if he was still pastoring there. Thanks, Marsha!!
Memphis is known for bbq. Personally, I like Corky's. And did someone say Memphis is close to Chattanooga??? NOT!! BTW, are you coming through Nashville? I will send you a txt.
Marsha Gupton
Well....close.
I live 64 miles away in New Albany, MS although I could see how you could make that mistake as most of my gigs are in Memphis.
Collierville is on the East side of Memphis; correct in saying it is one of the white-flight suburbs. It is however close to the best pulled pork sandwich on the planet at Germantown Commissary. As for Naz churches there I'm no help as it is too far for me to drive. I know we have none other than tiny house churches in my area.

OK, so far I have 3 bbq possibilities for this fall's trip to Memphis: Corky's, Rendesvous, and Germantown Commissary.
OK, Dana, you ask "What does BBQ have to do with Grace Church?"
Well, let's see: Grace Church is aobut God and his good gifts to us. BBQ comes close to the top of that list.

Well, take this for what it's worth. Nothing wrong with any of those, but if you had to pick ONE place that everything is good, upstart Central BBQ (either location) is becoming a favorite of locals. In the Memphis Flyer they consistently are in the top 3 of every category.... ribs, sandwich, etc. They do some great ribs in an unusual way; half wet and half dry. Also take a local tip and get an order of the dry rub chicken wings...my wife's fave.
Rendezvous is a bit touristy but still worth going to for a try at the original charcoal smoked ribs with Charlie Vergous Greek dry rub. Corky's IMHO is not as good now that they expanded and are doing the frozen dinners but the pulled pork is decent. It hasn't been in the top 5 in any category in the Flyer in years if that tells you anything.
One of my favorites is Interstate. It is Jim Neely's place (father of the food network guy). It is in a very rough area though so I would avoid at night. The BBQ Spaghetti is a Memphis original
Last but not least stand in line off S. main for some Gus' Fried Chicken. You will thank me later.
