    Memorial Day, new version

    Emails from various purveyors of goods (mostly apparel) with the heartwarming message, "To celebrate Memorial Day, we're offering FREE SHIPPING with purchases over $100, today only!!!!"

    What a moving memorial to those who gave their lives in service to our country.

    General John Logan, Supreme Commander of the Grand Army, issued a decree on May 5, 1868 that on May 30, 1868 all the graves of both the Union Soldiers and the Confederate Soldiers killed in the Civil War were to be decorated with flowers. Boggles my mind that only 150 years ago our country was engaged in a bitter and bloody civil war concerning the question of human property.

    My understanding is that the practice we call Memorial Day had it's unofficial roots in the south, where Confederate widows had made it a practice to decorate the graves of their loved ones.

    In any case, I am in the middle of putting together an order for materials to build a bunch of road cases and the shipping cost is $250 with the provision that I have them cut up the extruded aluminum stock into lengths suitable for UPS, the cost is higher if I need them uncut.

    So yes, I would appreciate free shipping!

    In case you think I didn't take Memorial Day seriously I began our service yesterday with these words.

    In Flanders fields the poppies blow
    Between the crosses, row on row,
    That mark our place; and in the sky
    The larks, still bravely singing, fly
    Scarce heard amid the guns below.

    These are the words that we hear on Memorial Day, there's no need to read the rest, we have heard these words many times. And I'm reminded that this day is one we set aside to remember those who have sacrificed their lives so that we can live as a free people. Yet I would like to be more inclusive today. I'm reminded that my wife's grandfather served in World War II, he survived, returned home and he was discharged from his obligation to military service. He perished in a train wreck on his way home from Georgia. Can we include him? I'm also thinking of one who was willing to send His only Son into battle, and I'm thinking of this Son who was willing. Scripture tells us that He could have called ten thousand angels to His aid, Scripture tells us that He could have come down from the Roman cross. His service to all of us was voluntary, He loves us so that He gave His life for our freedom. Can we include Him?

    Can we realize and recognize this great love extended to us as we think of those whom have sacrificed in the more recent past. As we recognize the great love, can we look at others, not as just somebody else, but rather, can we look at folks and appreciate that they are loved by God. They are loved to the extent that He would give His Son to die for them?

    I would like to offer a different poem this morning. This one written during the civil war, and this one is a bit more inclusive.

    The little toy dog is covered with dust,
    But sturdy and stanch he stands;
    The tin soldier is red with rust,
    With his musket moulds in his hands.
    Time was when the little toy dog was new,
    And the soldier was passing fair;
    And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue
    Kissed them and put them there.

    "Now, don't you go till I come," he said,
    "And don't you make any noise!"
    So, off he toddled to his trundle-bed,
    Where He would dream of his pretty toys;
    And, as he lie dreaming, an angel song
    Awakened our Little Boy Blue---
    Oh! the years are many, the years are long,
    But the little toy friends are true!

    Ay, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand,
    Each in the same old place---
    Awaiting the touch of a little hand,
    The smile of a little face;
    And they wonder, as waiting the long years through
    In the dust of that little chair,
    What has become of our Little Boy Blue,
    Since he kissed them and put them there.

    Then we begin singing Gaither's "We Have This Moment"

    So how about that free shipping?
    -Jim

    To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

    From the sometimes useful Wikipedia under States Rights ... I did not consult Snopes ....:

    Civil War
    Over the following decades, another central dispute over states' rights moved to the forefront. The issue of slavery polarized the union, with the Jeffersonian principles often being used by both sides—anti-slavery Northerners, and Southern slaveholders and secessionists—in debates that ultimately led to the American Civil War. Supporters of slavery often argued that one of the rights of the states was the protection of slave property wherever it went, a position endorsed by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1857 Dred Scott decision. In contrast, opponents of slavery argued that the non-slave-states' rights were violated both by that decision and by the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. Exactly which—and whose—states' rights were the casus belli in the Civil War remain in controversy.

    How about this, maybe, which seems to reference the importance of humanity/individuals, rather than merely a detached concern for the collective, non-personal "states" and their "rights":

    (in particular, Lincoln's meditation, & also how each side used Scripture to support their cause ... yet another example of people reading the same Bible and coming up with totally different ideas/conclusions that don't mesh)

    Yes, though catalyst would be a better word choice.

    That is a good article. I would beg to differentiate between Causus Belli from above versus the reasons individuals fight.

    Few of us, including the individuals of an enemy force fight for the reasons stated by the principalities (the nation-states). I hold no ill will against any of the individuals of our state enemies unless they are pointing an AK at me, then we have a problem. There is a book who surveyed letters from soldiers from both sides. I'm sorry I do not remember the name. I think one would find a different view at the individual level versus the state level.

    Sorry, Kevin. But ~~ as an aside ~~ it does appear that copy/paste ... copy/paste ... copy/paste ... copy/paste ... copy/paste ... copy/paste ... copy/paste ... is alive and working very well. I'm done now, BTW. Just had to paste that link to Lincoln, and the just-like-today idea of two sides referencing Scripture with radically different results.
