Who'se going to be there?
Oh, it looks like it has to do with teen Bible quizzing. Had to use Google to find it, as Olivet's homepage doesn't mention it.
https://www.q2012.org/
Even that website doesn't come right out and tell you what it is. I guess they figure only people who know about it will visit it.
Now that I know what it is: No, I won't be there.![]()

my kids got the choice between camp and Q and they chose camp.....they would have had a blast at Q though
"Love without holiness disintegrates into sentimentality. Personal integrity is lost. But holiness without love is not holiness at all. In spite of its label, it displays harshness, judgmentalism, a critical spirit, and all its capacity for discrimination end in nit-picking and divisiveness."-Mildred Bangs Wynkoop
Yeah, I figured that out, eventually (as I said above).
Your post reminded me of a district email I received sometime in the past year or two. It was all about "CPC Orlando" that was coming up soon, and if people who were going wanted to meet up, etc, etc. I had to Google it to figure out that it was a Children's Pastors Conference. Apparently, the email was sent to all the kids ministry leaders on the district (though it didn't say that), and since we don't have a solo point person over that ministry area, I as pastor get those emails.
I replied to the person sending it to explain my confusion and to ask for more clarity in the future. Their future emails communicated much more clearly.![]()
World Quizzing is fun but they have their own annual tourney.
I served as District Quiz Director on the Rocky Mountain District for 8 years (this season that just ended was my first year not directing), and I took teams to Q2004 at ONU and Q2006 at SNU. The new DQD (who happens to be my younger brother) was hoping to try to take a team to ONU this summer, but the two trips that I took were largely subsidized by RMD NYI, and our coffers are pretty depleted at the moment. So it won't be happening.
I also retain a certain level of irritation that they keep scheduling them over the Independence Day holiday. Q2006 was the first year that they did this, and at the time I was told be quizzing leadership that for that one year it was the only option but they would be trying to avoid it in the future, but ever since it has happened then. For me personally it is not a big deal. But I had a hard time getting district teens excited to keep with Bible Quizzing after our regional tournament in April if it meant that they would miss the 4th of July. (In most RMD towns and counties, fireworks are perfectly legal.)
I did enjoy the two years that I went to Q, and I was really bummed that I had to skip out on the MVNU year, but it does not seem to be something that RMD will be doing again anytime soon.

My husband and I will be there along with 8 of our quizzers - 5 will also be participating on District teams. I'll be an official and Ken will be a coach/official. We will also have another parent with us who is coaching one of the district teams as well as our advanced team. We paid the bill for ourselves and the local teams/team members. Our district director paid for the five individual quizzers and the parent. He is taking 4 teams. He carries over some district money as well as hosting an invitational tournament to make the extra needed to go. His budget is $4,800 for this year. Last year he used just over half and saved $2,000 for this year's Q.
As to the use of July 4th - I think many of the adults appreciate using one less vacation day for quizzing. I no longer work but my husband uses a day in February for the Sterling invitational and takes a week off to get ready/assist with our Regional event, and then this week for Q using 10 vacation days for quizzing. For some adults that would be most if not all of their vacation days.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've been told. And I'll concede on a certain level that it does make some since. In my case as a church employee it would count as part of my job and not as vacation. But it has been my observation that most Bible Quizzing leadership is lay and not pastoral. (I suppose that it would also depend on the particular church. There are probably some that would require whomever to use it is vacation days.)
That doesn't change the fact that I'm against using that holiday, though. RMD quizzers are quite a bit different than those elsewhere. Have observed quite a bit of quizzing off of the RMD I can imagine that a lot of quizzers couldn't care less that they spend their holiday quizzing. But they do care here, and I do not anticipate much future involvement from us until they find another time frame to schedule Q. Which I guess is just the way it is.

I and Q 2006 & 2010, I skipped Q 2008 in favor of an all expense paid trip to Afghanistan (I may have been at 2004 but I don't remember, I've slept since then).
I think I'm on the tech team this year, I always go as a utility person, so I'll be doing whatever needs doing.
I'm using 10 days for Q this year. I don't get to subtract the 4th from my vacation time (I will next time). The 10 days I'm taking delays my final departure date from the Military by 10 days but its well worth it.
Actually, the norm is that it is over the 4th of July holiday as it was in 2002, I believe 2004 (though I could be mistaken, its been too long), 2006, and 2010 for sure. It is usually the best option because the universities have nothing else planned during those times, as well as it is a time when people who work full time can generally take a couple of days of vacation and come instead of an entire week.
It was not in 2004. That year it was in June. That was also at the conclusion of my first season as DQD, and the RMD had never really been a part of it before. So that is the first year that I have any knowledge. I know that I have spoken with Bill Horning multiple times about it, though, and early on I was told that in 2006 that was the only time available but that they would try to work with it in the future. Since then, though, I have been given the line about people's vacation and such.
If that is universally what is good for most of Quizzerdom, then that is probably the best time. It will never be a good time for the RMD mindset, though. I've always tried to push my district teens to participate in as much as possible, but they want times for their regular lives, too. If you had the option of blowing things up or going to do more Bible Quizzing after you have already been doing it for 10 months and are pretty much burned out, which would you choose? Certainly I have met many quizzers who would choose the latter, but not most Montana and Wyoming teens. So we'll stay home and blow stuff up. It's more fun. (For the record, I personally almost never shoot off fireworks. I'm just showing the mindset of the teens that I work with.)

I was thinking that it was in June that year, I just couldn't remember if that was the starting date in June (like June 30 or something). That's why I said I believed it was in 2004, but wasn't certain. Honestly, I never minded going to Q over the holiday because I could shoot off fireworks after the fact if I wanted to. It doesn't have to be Independence Day to shoot fireworks. I do understand the side of things for your youth though.

lol Yeah, the team wasn't doing so hot, so I told them that if they won a round I'd let them shave my head. I haven't gone back to having hair since! (With the exception of last summer, when a fellow RMD youth pastor challenged me to grow my hair out until our teen camp.)
Here's a picture of the shaving process:
