Yesteday, I drove to Mt. Rainier National Park to check out the hiking conditions.
In the past, you have seen pictures I have posted of the reflection of Mt. Rainier on the surface of Reflecion Lake. Well, this is the picture I took at that same spot yesterday. As you can see, summer hasn't completely arrived on Mt. Rainier.

I'm just glad the temperature finally broke here. It was 73 last night (still is, actually) so we turned off our AC & opened windows. It's only forecast to get up to 82 today! Thank God! It's been bouncing around the upper 90's - low 100's for way too long, and staying in the mid-to-upper-80's at night!
Interestingly, I talked to my mother yesterday and she told me her (primary) school would give the children the day off if the temps got above 80. Interesting, because I never heard of such a rule, but even more, because apparently in the late 30's and early 40's, people (still?) used Fahrenheit over here. I had no clue. You learn something new every day.

Last summer in north Texas was the hottest on record. Temperatures were 112 on many days, and we had the most days of 100+ in recorded history, combined with severe drought. The AC just could not keep up, and there was no relief. I am tickled to death with our high 90s this year.

I learned something too. I didn't know that Fahrenheit was ever used in Europe. I wish the U.S. would adopt Celsius. It makes so much sense to have the numbers start at freezing.

Just checking in from Southern California. I can't speak for places like the desert, but here in Pasadena it's not bad at all. I'm rather enjoying our summer weather. It's cool enough to walk in the mornings. Right now it just past 4 P.M. I'm guessing that it might be 85 degrees or so. It's nice. Eat your heart out, Gina! I know how much you miss SoCal.

Yes, would probably go there again as quickly as back to AZ. But definitely want out of Michigan before winter ... sad something like that can only be a dream yet, after only being that for too many years already (decade+ already) !!

Lindsey is living in Phoenix for the summer, and guess what, her car's AC died last week. Her BLACK car. Needless to say, she's pretty uncomfortable. She put her key in the lock of her apartment door yesterday and it "melted" -- bent -- she claims it was from the heat of her car. ha ha Quite possible, I suppose. Poor girl. New AC system is being installed at the end of this week.......I hope she can survive for 5 more days. Pretty hot in Phoenix!!!

Yes, I feel terrible for her. Fortunately, she has a professional mechanic for a brother, so between Tyler & Bert, they will have it fixed by this weekend.......we have to replace the whole system. Bless her heart, she is a good sport about it. She just gets to her house and lies flat on the coooool tile floor!! ha ha ha Lots of Jamba Juice and ice water when she drives. She's doing okay. Just doesn't want this to last TOOO long!! I don't blame her!!!

I think most Arizonans find this whole heat wave thing somewhat amusing. Of course, we are more prepared for it. It's going to be 115 today in Mesa. Not much different than 108 if you ask me. I can't tell the difference, hot is hot. What say you?

7 degrees isn't a huge difference. But highs here just dropped from the upper-90's+ range of the past couple weeks into the mid-80's of the week to come. Lows dropped from the 80's into the low 60's. That's a significant drop, and one for which I am quite grateful!
Me too, even though we're a few degrees warmer here. I am so very happy to see the forecast show lows below 70 this week. That means we can open our windows instead of turning on the AC. And after weeks without significant rain we had a storm move through with the cold front yesterday and give us some much-appreciated precipitation -- just as we were getting ready for our first night of VBS (with outdoor activity plans).

Yes, imagine going all one summer without it!
Right, I do, too, but anyway . . . . what I did that summer was start carrying two water bottles instead of one. Added a pour-over-me-now-&-then bottle for cooling purposes to my drinking water bottle! In that heat the water you have poured over yourself evaporates quickly, anyway!!
ETA: Next summer found some clearance change-over freon kit (vehicle had old kind in it), got that, took it to my mechanic, and finally had air back.

Some of the Old timers at Mesa First Nazarene were here in those days and they claim it was pretty miserable. Today we have cool roofs (tile), sun shields over windows and Air Conditioners that are on steroids. Not to mention the fact that every other home in our neighborhood has a pool. So truth be told, we are much better equipped to deal with the extreme heat than previous generations.

Humidity makes all the difference. The dry heat of the desert can actually feel cooler than the reading on the thermometer. For example, today it was 111 degrees in Phoenix, Az. The humidity level was at 8% and a wind was blowing. The heat index, how hot it "feels" was 104.
On the flip side, you can have a temperature of 96 degrees with a humidity level at 75% and the heat index jumps to an astounding 132 degrees. (in the shade)
When the humidity is high the body is not able to cool itself because sweat does not evaporate well and at 90% humidity it completely stops...thus high humidity plus heat becomes a very serious deadly situation.
Having lived in the Sahara desert (Egypt) during a period of extreme drought and having been raised in an extremely hot/humid climate, Baytown, Tx...I will take desert heat anytime. The hottest I've ever been in was 125 and I'll take that over a hot humid day in Houston any day of the week. In Houston...the sweat just continually dripped off me...in Egypt...I rarely broke a sweat. The sweat evaporated off due to the low humidity and although it was hot my body was able to cool itself.

Right now it is 46% humidity and that feels dry and comfy to me. It is often 80% humidity here, thus really adding to my misery, migraines and hatred of summer. 8% would give me a chance of surviving summer.
Another consideration is dew points. I know that once it hits 70 dewpoint that a migraine will begin.
This reminds me of 4 years ago when I was in southern Illinois for my grandmother's funeral around this time of year. The day of the funeral, it was so unbearably muggy that I just wanted to die from the misery of it all. It was 95 F, humidity was probably at 95% and dew point had to have been in the 70s as well. My aunt [who lives in Thailand] and I were leaving the funeral home when she said "Hey, it is finally starting to warm up here."I thought she had finally gone insane, truly.

Agree with Cynthia. Lived in AZ quite a few years, but before that ~~ not considering soCali moderate climate now that is great, too ~~ was in the Houston area one summer (& in the RioGrande Valley a bit another summer, too) and recall those hard-to-breathe-outside simultaneously high humidity/temperature times. Give me desert heat any day over that, for sure!

Very true. I lived in Florida and experienced what you describe. The humidity is a factor, I get it. My parents have owned homes in both places (Arizona & Florida) and they prefer Florida. They claim Arizona is too hot. But as I recall North Central Florida was terribly hot and humid and there were more bugs. My wife tells me we hit the jackpot here, it's a dry heat and not so many bugs. Yeah we have geckos on the back porch and an occasional cock roach. I do see why Arizona is a growing state.

By being very hot. I still can't imagine how a family of 5 drove to the south of France with their entire camping gear with them, in a Volkswagen Beetle. Without there being just a single patch of interstate in France (first one was build in 1966). Took us 4 days to drive 800 miles. And no, we never even heard of AC in cars.
In fact, some years later my dad had a caravan (RV kind of thing that you tow behind your car) and our 1500 cc Saab 96 could barely make it through the mountains with that thing. So when the motor got hot, dad fired up the heating. Which worked miracles on the motor. It was less comfortable for us, with temps already in the 90's outside. Still we managed.

Agreed. Never lived in FL, but have been there a couple of times in hot weather ... humidity is much less desirable than that dry heat! As for those geckos, they never bothered me, they're so cute!

However, back in the "olden days" -- we didn't have nearly the amount of concrete surfaces that we have today. That makes it feel SO MUCH hotter than it used to feel back in the day. I don't imagine they had it quite as hot as we have it now. I'm sure it was hot and uncomfortable, but probably not as bad as we have it now. The concrete roads and other surfaces that we have without the shade from trees all that much have added to our heat.
I don't mind the heat at all, though. Love being outdoors in it. Just don't like being INDOORS in it!!!!

I bought my 1987 Subaru in 1986 and drove it for 12 years. For 12 years, I said, "The next car I buy is going to have air conditioning, I don't care HOW much extra it costs, I don't care if I have to take out a second mortgage to pay for it, I don't care if I have to sell Grandma's china cabinet...."
When I bought my current Subaru in 1999, I said to the dealer, "I want one that has air-conditioning!" He looked at me as though I had just fallen off a covered wagon. "Uh, ma'am," he said. "They all have air conditioning now."
