Isaac loves Illinois! Such a sissy hurricane. Afraid to cross the Wabash River to get into SW Indiana. Our 100% chance of rain today with several inches expected has brought us hardly a drop.

I'm resorting to taunting. (X marks the spot.)

Sure looks like you ought to get something soon. I know what it's like to be in a drought and missing a good chance for rain. Hopefully, the "showers of blessing" are on the way.

which brought us nothing. It moved north up Illinois instead of east.

Old Fort Vincennes seems impregnable. We were down there tonight. Even crossed to the Illinois side but didn't see any rain. We had sunshine this afternoon and the moon rose large in the eastern sky around 9 p.m.

Here's a shot of the George Rogers Clark Memorial in Vincennes taken from the Illinois side of the Wabash River tonight. Beautiful evening.

Like I said - this Isaac biz is all well and good - hope there's plenty of moisture to go around for everyone. But.......let's get this mess outta' the way so we're not dealin' with in it October. Flying into New Orleans (staying out in Kenner-hope the lake's down by then) then on to Memphis, Nashville, and Atlanta. So get 'er dried out.

Apparently taunting works. We have had steady rain for several hours now. Nothing big and blustery, just the rain we so desperately need.

Thanks for sending us your hurricane remnants, people of Louisiana. We'll send what we can't use back down the Mississippi River.

Excellent! Thanks for asking. We have had over three inches of nice steady rain and it's still misting. Peas are up. Radishes are up. Cars are cleaner. Life is good.

I hoped hurricane threads were finished for the year, but I'm resurrecting this old thread because, as of right now, the "perfect storm" is aimed for New York city and much of the east coast. Do we have any NazNetters near the predicted landfall?

From your current map Scott, 2am Tuesday is just outside of Delaware and Ryan Scott, and 2am Wednesday is right over Susan Unger, I believe, with Mike Schutz about half-way between the two of them.

Re: Here we go - a tropic disturbance with a high probability of formation

So... my parents left Fort Lauderdale on a Panama Canal cruise on Tuesday (10/23)... They are celebrating their 50th anniversary, and it's their first cruise. They were scheduled to go between Cuba & Haiti on their way to Aruba (10/25). However, Princess reversed the course of the cruise and went the other way through the itinerary, intending to stop at Grand Cayman on Wednesday (10/24). GC is a tender port, which means the ships moor in the harbor and they use tender boats to get to port. Unfortunately, the wind/surf was too high at GC, so they headed out for their next stop (Limon, Costa Rica).

I'm hoping they make it through the rest of the cruise without any other schedule changes or interruptions... and also that the captain has been able to find smooth seas!
    Grace and Peace,

Not now, in our case, but my husband is scheduled to fly out Sunday afternoon for a Monday meeting in Washington, D.C. It hasn't been cancelled yet, but there's definite concern.

By the way, we have done great at whittling away on our precipitation shortage since Isaac finally broke through the blockade at Old Fort Vincennes in August. It will be just fine if this storm loses its momentum and fades away somewhere in Pennsylvania or Ohio.

The arctic blast arrived here last night. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day with a high of 80. It's now 43 and headed toward the low 50s for today's high. Quite the contrast.

Re: Here we go - a tropic disturbance with a high probability of formation

We're supposed to start getting rain Sunday. It's already been downgraded to a Category 1 storm and not expected to make landfall until Tuesday.

That being said, they've been freaking out about it around here - no generators to be had (our local power service is notoriously slow about fixing downed lines).

The storm last year was a Cat 1 with very little damage on the Jersey shore when it hit. Our house here is much higher in elevation and had much better drainage than in NJ. We were fine there and I suspect we'll be fine here.

If the storm does pass directly over us, I'm a little concerned about our trees - not that I care much about the trees themselves, but they might hit the house.

It's a long ways off yet. I'm sure we'll be fine.

Yup, Tuesday night into Wednesday morning it will probably be near me. I am not at all happy about this. Last year's storms did soooo much damage in my area leaving me psychologically too worn out for another storm. But, I am going to be more prepared for this one. I have my fresh batteries in my large flashlight, some candles, Imitrex, my solar/hand crank radio with weather channels on it and will get to the store today for my canned goods, bread and milk.

I am surrounded by trees and my power always seems to go out very easily so I will probably be without power.

Re: Here we go - a tropic disturbance with a high probability of formation

We have hundreds of the poorest people in our community who live in flood- prone areas. They have been flooded out four times in the decade, even when we get only 4" or 5" of rain from a storm- much less than what they are calling for with this storm. These are the folks who come to our food and clothing ministry, and we know them well. Most are Spanish-speaking, and are reluctant to listen to government authorities.
We have been in touch with Regional Emergency Management several times today, and our local shelter will open at noon on Sunday. Unfortunately, we do not have the occupancy permit on our church's new building, which will also serve as a shelter in the future.

I've just added those in the path of the hurricane to our Sunday morning prayer list. After hurricane Ike, our folks have a special concern for people facing one of these monster storms.

I hope everyone is okay. I see that the hurricane morphed into a superstorm as it hit a massive cold front.

Re: Here we go - a tropic disturbance with a high probability of formation

I'm just north of DC, right here: 39.2,-77.2

My wife, MIL, and son all had work/daycare cancelled as of last week. All schools got cancelled for Mon and Tues as of Fri. I went in this morning and my office closed at noon. Craziest commute ever, NO ONE was on half the roads. I have a 45 min commute and I counted a total of 12 cars on the way in this morning.

It's been raining since yesterday evening. Dark clouds since last night, haven't seen the Sun since Saturday. Now it's raining, 45º F and around 45 mph winds.

Honestly I'm waiting to see what the fuss is about. I've been through plenty of hurricanes before, experienced a few on the beach. I still can't see the fantastic nature of the storm that everyone's been talking about. I guess I'll know in the morning when I watch the news. According to the news they want everyone in my area to sleep in the basements since the worst of the storm is supposed to hit us around midnight.
UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED ALL DIMENSIONS ARE BASIC.

Re: Here we go - a tropic disturbance with a high probability of formation

We're in the midst of the eye right now. Very little wind or rain, but the worst is still to come. We've got power at the moment, some of the few on the east coast. Lots of outages from DC to Boston.

This will be the most devastating storm in history for the Jersey Shore. We're getting lots of rain here, but things seem to be pretty normal for a bad storm.

PA is having real trouble with flooding and wind. The Appalachians are getting big time snow.

Predicted to have sustained winds over 30 mph until Thursday.

Our family has been very fortunate, but these news reports are terrible, and it's just beginning for many. Where we are has been mainly wind, with sufficient rain, and we a few hundred miles north of the storm. Tomorrow I will venture to New Hampshire to check the house there.

New York City is getting pummeled. It's pretty bad there - record high storm surge, water in the subways, a large swath of Manhattan without power, building collapses.

We're getting the worst of the eye now, really heavy winds. Hopefully we can keep the power on for a little while longer. They're expecting rain through Wednesday morning for us.

They're saying 39th street and south in New York is dark. Just a real massive disaster.

Video from the Jersey Shore shows even stronger wins on the back end than we had out in front of the storm. We'll see if it's still that strong when it gets here. I know we're not really out of the woods until the sun comes up.

We made out okay. In fact, the Red Cross is closing our shelter.
However, New Jersey and the NY metro area are in really bad shape.
We are waiting to hear reports from our New Jersey churches.

This, concerning Metro NY, via Pastor Bruce Barnard:

Our District Superintendent, Art Alexander, has asked me to report: "90% of people on Long Island are without power, cell service, and any easy way to communicate. Hurricane Sandy has left a major disaster in her wake that will take a very long time from which to recover. We are thankful that, so far, we have no reports of death or injury to our church family. Please keep all of the Metro NY churches, pastors, and families in your prayers."

I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how fast folks recover from this. Northeast folks are hardy, stubborn, hardworking and incredibly resilient. Recovery will be quick.
