    Re: Ever given a $ 500 tip?

Nope. Best I've ever been tipped was $150 on a $90 tab.

One of our bartenders at work got a $200 tip on a $50 tab.

The best I've seen is one of our waitresses made a $600 tip on a $100 tab. Crazy, crazy, crazy. She walked with $800 that night on a regular old Friday night.

Me and the other two guys who bartended double-shift on St. Paddy's day walked with $1,000 and that's the most I've ever seen someone carry home for one night.

I've had a couple of customers tip me over the years. I do house painting, and a lady tipped me $250 on a $950 job and $120 on a $300 job. I plan on going back to paint her bedrooms.

I've been "tipped" for funeral messages more than once....

(Defined by a lesser-related family member insisting on giving me a cash gift above and beyond the primary family's honorarium.)

When I give more than $100, I call it a "bonus" rather than a tip.

A friend of mine who is a Nazarene in Bethany, OK, made the news this week for somethng similar. He stood on a busy corner in Oklahoma City and handed out $5 bills.

I had a grandson that work at a night club where pro football player and country singer would come and he told me there would be night that he would make $500 in tips. This may not be a tip but I have brother in law and does this three time month he will go into resturant order a meal and he will pick out couple and walk over to them and tell them he is paying for their meal.
    Thanks

I heard of a man who tip a Nazarene church $10,000 just because he like the music he wasn't even a Nazarene he was just passing through.

Hey. I remember NW 39th and May - that's where we turned south to go to Ned's. Too bad he wasn't there in '57 - you could buy a fair amount of pizza for $5 in those days.

Paying or receiving "tips" is not a general feature of Australian culture. e.g. We will go to a restaurant for a meal and at the end of the night go to the cashier and simply pay for the meals and drinks...... no tips are expected. The Restaurant staff are instead paid at the very least an award wage from the proprietor.

I left $20 and a hand written "Happy Mother's Day" note on the pillow for the motel maid where I was staying, Mother's Day morning, several years ago. I was 300 miles away from my lovely bride, attending to my very ill nursing-home bound earthly father.

I guess that's the largest "tip" I've ever left.

    Color me cheapo.

    Dave,

I started to just hit "thanks" for your post, but wanted to say that Doug Eaton has hit on something that I think should be sort of "Mother Teresa-ified" in our general culture. Doug did something nearly anyone can do to some degree. I have mulled the thought that perhaps we should start a "DE" (Doug Eaton) club where people join by participating in similar good works.

    Friend,

    Wes

PS. I "tipped" two tree-trimmers the equivalent of a day's wage yesterday. Would love to have heard their discussions at the dinner table last evening! They risked their lives in order to remove tree limbs from over our home. It seemed to me that they deserved more than the typical low Costa Rican wage!

I would broaden the definition of tip there... I've had the primary family hand me an envelope after the service (or put it in the mail), even though they know that they've fully covered my honorarium through the funeral home. It can be a little awkward, because I feel the need to make sure they know that they've already covered me... but I've never had anyone then say, "Oh... really? Well... never mind then... I'll just keep it myself."

My guess is that some people would do that instead of giving to the offering--or at least deducting that amountv from the offering.

Doug Eaton was one of my youth leaders during his time in Frederick, Maryland. Handing out $5 at intersections is classic Doug.

In the fall of 1944 a Nazarene sportsman came from Indiana to hunt pheasants near Watertown, SD and looked up the Nazarene church which was just getting started in our parsonage home and realizing we were a struggling start up of only 8 people slipped my dad a $100 bill which would be like a thousand today. The SD district was supporting us at $20/week.
