More of the church being the church...

Robin leads a small group of young adults at my church. This group started for a relatively narrow demographic: Some kids who aged out of our teen group whose parents weren't part of our church, who didn't head off to college, and who struggle finding and keeping good jobs. The 20 to 25 year-old group members take turns picking a fast food place to meet, eat, fellowship, pray, and have a short Bible study. Yesterday afternoon, group member Patrick told her that he couldn't make it because his family was moving and he had to help. Without batting an eye or giving it a second thought, Robin contacted the rest of the group, told them to dress for outdoor heat, and come early for a FAST dinner after which they'd all head out for a special project. The group then went and helped with the move. (Being like Jesus rather than talking about Jesus.) Based on the situation upon our arrival (lack of preparation, lack of manpower, lack of organizational skills), I honestly don't know how the family would have pulled this off without the group's help.

Re: More of the church being the church...

One Wintery Sunday afternoon I had a group of teens hanging at my house. One of them got a call from his dad saying his older sister's apartment was flooding and get over there to help. I rounded up the teens and we all went over. The pipes in the apartment above her had frozen and broke sending the water into her apartment - it was ankle deep and stuff needed to be moved quickly. We missed the evening service but it said a lot to his dad that we were willing to wade through the cold water to help.
