Netherlands wins first men's gymnastics medal... and it's gold!

We just got around to watching yeaterday's men's gymnastics finals... and according to the NBC commentators, it's the first time the Netherlands has won an Olympic medal in men's gymnastics. Zonderland just won gold on the high bar. It's an amazing routine, of you get the chance to watch it.

Of course, the only reason I care is because of Hans.

Yes it was and I had the same reaction. - Congratulations Epke Zonderland. The enormity of going from zero to gold is hard to exaggerate.

I saw it, and it was a very impressive routine. I'm not an expert on gymnastics by any definition, but when he stuck his landing I said to Andrea, "he just won a gold medal."

It's without the doubt the most spectacular gold medal of these Olympics for the Netherlands. Medals in other areas like cycling, hockey, sailing, swimming are wonderful but not extraordinary, we've seen those before. This one is very different. We're definitely not a nation of gymnasts, so it is really this rare talent and of course the determination and training that made this happen. He mostly did this one his own. Now the positive result might be that there will be more attention for this type of sport, and children will be more motivated to start doing this, seeing how a regular guy from the province of Friesland can actually win a gold medal at the Olympics.
