    Older friends, whats your exercise?

OK I do like golf, but dont play it enough to count. But it is a good exercise.
Recently my wife and I have gone back to swimming. We havent done this for a long time, once we were very good swimmers. But for our age, early sixties, its an exercise we can easily cope with.
We do walk our dogs, or at least the dogs walk us!
As one gets older I beleive exercise is still important, but has to fit our ages.
For us, errrrr, more mature people, what exercise do you recomend? participate in yourself?

Ian, most of what I do is cycling to and from the office, 13km a day. Beyond that, I usuall walk during lunch break and quite frequently with Hannie in the evening or during the weekend.
When we go on a vacation, we love hiking through mountainous areas.

I've been using the butt blaster at the Gym. Since John Wesley had buns of steel well into his eighties, I figured I better start working at it.

He was not a good horse rider, in fact, he preferred to walk and read a book at the same time.

Yoga three times a week for this 65 year old. Walking nearly every day and work, work, work around the place. Grand Canyon in October, here I come! Gonna be a good time!

By the way, I thought I was in pretty good shape before I got into the yoga class. Learned the very first day that I was pretty (well not pretty, you know) pathethic! Making good progress. My buns are not steel (older men actually have frog butts), but maybe pvc or reasonable facsimile thereof. At least they are not butter!

    Friend,

    Wes

I am nearly 50, and I do not know if I fit in your demographic. My wife and I walk almost 3 miles at least 5 times per week. I cycle about 50-60 miles per week. And when I golf,(once per week) I walk 18 holes.
On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place.

I wear a pedometer and make sure I walk 10,000 steps each day. In order to get 10,000 steps, Linda and I take a 3 mile walk each day. That gets about 5,000. The other 5,000 come from a normal routine. Near the end of the day, if I don't yet have the 10,000 steps, I walk on the treadmill long enough to complete the goal.

    Friend,

    Wes

Haha, that is hallyrous! Frog butts...oh my. I guess a frog butt is better than no butt. Anyway, if you come through Phoenix this Oct. on your way to the Grand Canyon, let me know and we'll try to connect.

I never read he was a lousy horse rider, what is your source? For one who travelled over 250.000 miles, mostly on horseback, it seems to me he would have had to learn something about horse riding.
As to his preferences, he also preferred not to speak in the open air. Didn't stop him all the same.

Well, there's a lovely picture to take with me as I go to the gym this afternoon. As I see the older men working around me all that will come to mind is.... well, you know.

Do you have any good recommendations for a pedometer? I have several but they are all cheapies and don't seem to be very accurate.

I'm closer to 60 than 50. My wife and I enjoy walking (our subdivision would qualify as strenuous) hiking (we live in an awesome area for that) and biking (this areas really good for that too). Each time I visit a housebound parishioner I am increasingly motivated.

Walking and swimming are the best for me. I don't have good affordable access to a pool right now, but that would be my exercise of choice.

Re: Older friends, whats your exercise?

I just turn 71 and I love to swim and yet I haven't been to the poor this summer. I like to play golf when I think of it. we have total Gym that both of uses. Some exercise I can do because of my elbow. One of the best exercise I have trim the yard which take a lot of pulling and pushing and swating after 30 mininute I'm wore out. Playing Keep away with the dog is good exercise for old men.
    Thanks

Re: Older friends, whats your exercise?

The fact than many of us dont walk enough, and drive to places instead, is this often controlled by the time factor? In that our lives can be rather busy?
We tend to live in a heavy work free society, in that machines do it all for us. There arent actualy that many heavy manual jobs around today. My grandfathers generations were used to heavy manual work, at my age (early sixties) they were still strong men of muscular build. Now we errrrr more mature folks, are errrr rather flabby in the muscles area.

we walk together approx 30 mins most mornings - outdoors if the weather allows - at the mall if not.

And we are probably the oldest of the old.

Re: Older friends, whats your exercise?

It is essential for me to get in some kind of exercise every day, especially first thing in the morning.

I have not been as consistent about getting in 10,000 steps EVERY day as Dave, but make it many days. With temps in the 90s and high humidity most days over the last few months, I have not been able to walk to and from church every day, as I typically do for most of the fall, winter and spring. It's over 3 miles each way, and that's the best way to get in my steps. At some point in the day I typically need the car for visitation, which necessitates walking to Esther's school - another 1.4 miles.

I know the next thing I need to add to my regimen is strength training.

A few years ago my wife was having a lot of neck and back pain that was pretty much making her life miserable. Chiropractor visits were waste. Her Doctor recommended seeing a Physical Therapist and strength train (She was already biking and running so she was in pretty good cardio shape). After a brief evaluation the PT put her on an upper body strength training program. In a matter of months all of her neck and back pain was completely gone. Lesson learned: don't neglect those upper body muscles!

At 75, I walk down to the new Nature Reserve Park that the Boise Parks Dept. is installing 3 blocks away and there is enough difference in elevations that some up and down hill hiking is required. I take my cell phone with me should I fall and not be able to get up. I also take my binoculars to observe the wild life, ducks, geese. bald eagles, other raptorss and various critters, some fox and raccoons inhabit the area. My old Boy Scout walking staff is a good companion. Ah, the scent of sage brush.

I do weight lifting/strength training twice a week, and do cardio at least twice a week, though I need to do more. I alternate the cardio between intervals and long steady. I've been going to the gym regularly since February, but in May I booked 8 sessions with a personal trainer, which has been well worth the extra expense. I accomplished more in a month of working with her than I did the other 3 months prior. Now I see her twice a month to get new routines. Knowing I'm going to see her helps motivate me and keep me from slacking off. My weight loss has been slow, but I feel so much better and stronger. I was getting out of breath just walking up and down the stairs, now that's not the case. My goal is to be healthy; looking better is "icing on the cake" (not allowed to have real icing). I am also eating healthily and not eating junk food. After much encouragement, I got Dave to also book some sessions with my personal trainer and now he is doing much better too! We preached a sermon series this summer comparing aspects of physical fitness to some of the spiritual disciplines. It was fun to preach, and we've gotten some good feedback. (Sorry, this is more info than you asked for!)
