President Obama to visit my garage sale.

We have been planning another garage sale for this Saturday. This evening we received an invitation to meet President Obama when he visits the high school next door. I'm gonna try a sign specifically inviting him. Surely we'll have at least one thing he'll want for the White House.

Well, maybe, but that's one more thing to move out in January of 2013!

I think you should just give them to him. It will show that you have no hard feelings.

If he is short of cash, I'll personally guarantee his credit. He is going to need them.

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

Dennis, Obama wants to talk to you about buying your house and business as he will need something to do next year.

If I were in your position, Dennis, I would put up a sign saying, "Off limits to Chicago Democrats."

If it were me, my sign would read "All of God's creatures both great and small are welcome here."

But Jim, it doesn't work that way... Those who are moving HAVE garage sales; those staying put SHOP garage sales. Therefore, if he stops at Dennis' sale, you will need to take that as a bad sign.

Re: President Obama to visit my garage sale.

The President drove within a hundred feet of our garage sale, but didn't stop in. He was running a couple hours late. There were five helicopters and fifty secret service cars, but everybody was too busy. New Hampshire is a "swing state" this year. Does that mean everyone gets to take a swing? Seems a little strange.

We got rid of a bunch of stuff, for which people gave us money. There was a quite a bit of traffic in the area, and a lot of people needed a distraction. The President got to see a little of the wilds of New England.

I would advise against letting any government official know you're having a garage sale; you run too high of a risk of giving the person an idea for another thing to tax...

Actually, proceeds from garage sales are taxable, and those states with a sales tax maintain that it should apply, too. Most states have no one to enforce it, and the feds certainly don't. As for income tax, ask any accountant, and especially about expensing.

I don't remember the last time I had a garage sale, so it basically doesn't matter to me. But just sayin' -- don't call a government official's attention to something like this--they'll FIND a way to enforce it!

So, the stuff you once bought on your taxable income, and now sell, would produce income that is taxable again? Does that mean that the folks who buy it can deduct it?

That's what I was just going to say. I buy a sweatshirt for $20, sell it at a yard sale for $1, and I have to pay tax on that??? That dollar doesn't strike me as profit or income.

Well, the other day I was already called "Nasty, self righteous, critical" by a former NazNetter, so it might be best to refrain from further comments and leave it up to you guys to sing the praise of the IRS.
