    My final Bible?

My kids hated that statement, saying my parents lived until 90+ and Im still in my 70's etc but yet its probably true.

    Lemme explain, please.

I really use my Bibles....I highlight and underline and circle and write sermon dates and notes in the margins. Its just something Ive always enjoyed doing. And my bibles last about ten years. Then they are worn out, held together with carton sealing tape, etc., as mentioned here some time back.

And that was the case back then with both my NIV and Wesley NKJV Bibles. So I made an appeal here for the Wesley Bible and a very gracious fellow NazNetter sent one to me. I was delighted and use it every morning during my devotions.

Inside that bible I noted the name Orpha Specter and wondered who that might be. So via email I asked that fellow Naz-Netter. I was shocked and very pleased with the answer.

    (See: http://home.snu.edu/~hculbert/speicher.pdf)

Dr. Orpha Specter graduated from the old Pasadena College as a teacher, and applied to the Church of the Nazarene to go as a teaching missionary to India.

She was told India didnt need teachers. They needed doctors.

So she went back to school, obtained her degree and eventually - get this now - served as a medical missionary in India for more than 40 years. FORTY YEARS!

And I now have her own personal bible, in which she has underlined specific notes regarding the Wesleyan perspective on holiness and sanctification.

    I feel highly honored.

    And blessed.

The article you quoted has refrences to a book written by Evelyn Witthoff. Evelyn was a medical missionary to India as well, she was my first cousin 2x removed.

Reminds me of a good Free Methodist friend of mine. He was a contractor and the FM church sent him to South Africa to do a lot of work on one of their hospitals there. He was so fascinated by medical missions that he went to med school in So Africa and Scotland and served the church as a missionary doctor for a number of years. When he returned to the US and set up a surgical practice he did most of his work at San Bernardino Co Med Center - said practicing there reminded him a lot of the kind of emergency surgery he did in So Africa.

    A treasure indeed!

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

Nelson - I'm so glad you're enjoying the Bible. I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Speicher while she was still living at Casa Robles for one of my courses at Fuller. A wonderful woman, indeed!

    Re: My final Bible?

Sorry to dig up this thread, but as much as I'd want to say I've worn out a Bible I can't.

I believe I've been called to witness to a certain non-orthodox people, one who only advocate the use of the KJV. As part of my efforts I've made myself open to give away any Bible that I might be carrying at the time. So say I'm in a conversation with someone, they notice I'm holding a modern translation and they want to look at it. I'll offer it to them right then and there (I've learned to take my notes on 3x5 cards so I won't lose them). I ended up giving away every Bible I had within a few weeks and now order them by the case so I always have a spare.

I find it rather amusing that you're lucky to have a Bible last 10 years where I feel amazing when I have to get a new one every day!

I like to give away my bibles, too, though don't do it as much as you
