I think the League needs to settle with the refs. This league makes a lot of money and being a ref isn't exactly an easy job. You get death threats and insults constantly. They earn every cent of their pay, I view it as hazardous duty pay. So the NFL needs to buck up and get this deal done.

I totally agree as I have worked the chains or downs marker at both the high school and college level on a volunteer basis and as a HS principal it was my job to write and sign the checks for basketball referees. The assuredly earn whatevere they are paid.
I guess they are still at odds and a settlement does not appear to be an end in sight. I don't think it is a part-time job, there is travel involved and a lot of pre-game logistics that have to be handled. Of course, they are off from January to August, I don't deny that. But they have to stay in shape and keep up with rule changes and small nuances to the game. And when you consider the Millions America's most popular sport generates, it almost seems like an insult that the refs make what they do. They have to be at the top of their game and they are likely among the best. I think we are seeing just how good they are when you consider the bad calls made in the pre-season. So I think you get what you pay for and they need to buck up and pay these guys.
No, it is a part-time job. I have a good friend who is a back judge in the NFL. He works his regular job during the week and arrives for his NFL assignment late Friday night. The Crew meets together all day Saturday. They are evaluated from the previous week, talk about the teams playing the next day and study the rules, etc. It is quite a cushy part-time job.

In a previous church, one of our members was a former NFL ref. He was an Umpire when they were positioned behind the defensive line. He received his share of hits in that location, or course, all without the pads used by the players. Sadly, that has quite possibly contributed to his premature problems with brain injuries/dementia.
It may be a part-time job but cushy is not so much a word I'd use based on the hits they receive. The cameras just don't focus on the officials until the head ref speaks through his mic after a penalty flag is thrown.
Okay, that helps, it is part-time (if there is such a thing). But a Cushy job? Really? Would you call cushy having a Coach get in your face? Fans throwing stuff at you, screaming at you and threatening you? And what if you get hit by a player like Troy Palumalu who flies across the field like Superman? It's called Hazzard pay! And they deserve every penny they earn.
Finally a verbal agreement has been reached and the regular professional referees will be on the job this weekend. Vote on contractual agreement to come later. As much as they are betated it must be nice for them to feel needed. Oh, what a relief it is.
