    ERNIE HARWELL ... a voice, a book, a play . . . a LIFE

    Here's a post originally put in the thread that ended up being mostly about Tebow, so decided to move it & give it its own thread ... about Ernie Harwell, a voice I grew up with (or more grammatically correct: "with which I grew up." ) ... one who quietly lived out his faith.

    Here's one that I recall, growing up in his territory ~~ the athletic announcer rather than player ~~ who was known for kindness, yet we do not know if in the past this was (ever publicly) connected to his faith. Don't recall hearing re that until hearing re the book, My Father's Faith, written by his son. Seems he just sort of quietly lived it out, rather than calling attention to it, tho' we do read in this link that he started the season with "lines from Song of Solomon," it says (hmmm ... did the writer get another Solimon book mixed up with gjis one, since it seems it would more likely have been a portion of Eccles where there is a "time for this, that & the other," including baseball??).

    {also mentions a couple songs he wrote with links in this article; we will have to listen }

    AND then here is a link re the book I mentioned ... as well as another to a play by Mitch Albom (known for other books/TV movies) called simply, ERNIE.

    Son speaks of his book:

    Reviews of it (called a "home run"):

    Listening to Ernie (and George Kell) broadcasting my beloved Detroit Tigers games: one of my fondest childhood memories!

    I used to listen to Ernie when I lived in the Gary, IN area when the Cubs and the White Sox were generally near or at the bottom of their leagues I would tune into a Detroit station and I do remember Ernie pronouncing "Art Houteman" "Dizzy Trout" "Hank Greenburg" and those Tiger players of the 40s.

    I was privileged to get acquainted with Ernie Harwell in Seattle when in town to broadcast Tiger games against the Mariners. What a great announcer and wonderful Christian man.
