up for sale or going on the auction block?
up for sale or going on the auction block?
No. John Henry is not selling.
"Fully embracing the Gospel, fully engaging the world"
Actually, lots of people are saying that they'll be sold this offseason. Henry has made his money buying struggling assets and turning them into profit. He's been spending a lot of his time over in the UK with his Liverpool football team (his wife is even living in London these days). They also cut $150m in payroll through trades this season.
It's estimated that the holdings of the Red Sox owners (including the stadium and surrounding area, NESN, and others) could fetch $2.5 billion. Not a bad profit.
I think it's still up in the air, but the case for a sale is pretty believable at this point.
...just my $.02.
John Henry has said there is nothing to the reports, and I would prefer to believe him than the media. But since we know that all successful capitalists lie, they are likely to sell tomorrow.

When the media asks someone a question about an issue that's not ready to be announced publicly, I guess the choices are: lie, be evasive, or decline to answer. Some choose the first option. So maybe they're for sale, maybe they aren't. That answer holds as much weight as the boss saying, "We don't foresee any layoffs at this time."
They appear to be wishfully-thought rumors in Boston at this point.
Even more far-fetched and even more wishfully-thought is that Bob Kraft would be the one to make the purchase.

I'm not sure what all the hub-bub is about. The Red Sox made an extremely stupid decision signing Carl Crawford at all, much less for the albatross of a contract he got, and they signed a very good 1B who didn't pan out and wasn't a good locker room guy in Boston. They got the Dodgers to take two miserable contracts off their hands, and dumped some more salary which gives them freedom to go after other big fish this or next offseason. Add to that the emergence of Middlebrooks and the revelation of Ross in Fenway, and a healthy Pedroia and Ells, this team is primed to compete next year or the year after. They'll still spend tons of money, and now they ahve the money to spend again.

Bobby Valentine seems to think he has the worst lineup in baseball. Will he be back next season?
Well, at least he feels that the current roster is the weakest September roster in team history. A lot of people think that's true. Should a manager say that out loud? I don't think Bobby V is afraid to say what he thinks, at this point. I'd say a 2013 season for him is 50/50. Stranger things have happened.
