Branching off from the "Benefits of Getting Older" Thread

I also thought that there was going to be something more about getting older on the original thread besides fishing lures.

I was hoping it was going to be a discussion about things such as AARP. I received my application to join AARP a few months prior to my 50th birthday. I received another invitation not long before my 51st birthday. It would really be quite reasonable to join for 3 years at (I believe) less than $50. I could then get all kinds of discounts on things that would likely far exceed $50 over 3 years.

But I simply do not support the vast majority of AARP's political stances, and do not like the idea of supporting them through even modest dues of $50 for 3 years (less than $17 per year).

At the same time, I feel as though I am being stupid for not taking advantage of discounts that are available to me.

I've looked into another group (I can't remember the name now) that is an alternative to AARP, especially for people who do not like AARP's political stances, but I saw nothing about financial discounts available for members. If I were to join AARP, it would be almost exclusively for the discounts.

AARP is a front for the Democrats.
