Only 47% of Americans understand 47% of the MLB wildcard/playoff system and only 47% of those involved in the process understand what they are doing.

The two wildcard teams play one game to determine who will be the one wildcard team to possibly play in the rest of the playoffs. It really is simply a way to get another game into the schedule to bring in more money from the fans.

It's actually an attempt to force teams to play for the division. You can't sit players and coast to the WC to ensure a better matchup. That was the entire impetus behind the change.

I think that is a faulty way of doing it though because now a team truly can coast to the wildcard because it is easier to get a wildcard in the first place. Personally I would rather see a small series of games (say a best of three) to determine who moves on. A one game playoff just doesn't do anything truthfully.

No, it's harder to get the Wildcard berth into the division series. Sure, it is "easier" to get the wildcard spot, but that gives you a 1-game coin toss. Getting into the Division series is now harder than it was before, and winning your division outright is the easiest way to get there. I don't htink it's faulty at all, it accomplishes its goal perfectly.

    Thanks. A good morning laugh.

John, you're getting about as much mileage with this 47% as some are getting yet from the empth chair of Clint Eastwood, both ln late night as well as in the newspaper comics! :smilies1722
