    What was I thinking?

Norm and I are headed up to beautiful McCall, Idaho, tomorrow to run an aid station for our son-in-law's IMTUF (Idaho Mountain Trails Ultra Festival) 100-mile foot race. Hmmmm.....our aid station is at mile 62, and will run from 4:30 in the afternoon until 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The temperature is supposed to dip to 19 degrees overnight. When Norm retired from the military September 1st, we moved back to Idaho from..........SUNNY, WARM Arizona!! We are going to FREEZE!!! What were we thinking?? LOL

We're actually really looking forward to it. LOL Ultra-marathon runners are a fantastic group of people, and we'll be up in the mountains in a beautiful location, so it won't be so bad. Got my long-johns ready to go! I'm a little worried about the bears, mountain lions and wolves which are plentiful up there, though. I would not want to be a runner running through the forest in the middle of the night! Wait . . . we're the ones with the food. GULP!! Do you think a canopy surrounded by tarps will keep them away???

Probably nothing to worry about until you see the critters bowing their heads and singing "God is great, God is good, and we thank Him for this food......."

I don't know how to thank you for your comfort in this, my moment of terror! To think I'll have some warning! Do you suppose they close their eyes when they prey . . . I mean pray?

Oh, Debi! The cold sounds awful (I still miss AZ!), and the animals sound scary ... but since there's beautiful scenery, don't forget your camera!

Oh, yeah . . . and we pray you'll not become prey!

Welcome back to God's Country, Debi and Norm. I remember when we met at the Mexican restaurant in Nampa during that Wesley Conference a few years back. Hope to see you again soon. I started my teaching career in McCall in 1961 but rerely get up that way in my advanced stage of decrepidness. Cougar has been spotted along Boise's Greenbelt so that is one you won't have to contend with up there.

Well, the runners are off and running! The race started at 6:00 this morning, with 31 brave souls. Over the course of 100.29 miles, the runners will accumulate 22,156 feet in elevation! Amazing stuff!!

I try to spread a ray of sunshine wherever I go, but not in sufficient quantities to create a need for sunscreen. Cheers!

Scott, Norm and I both took our cameras up with us, but didn't take a single picture! I'm blaming it on my cold fingers! LOL

We had an incredible time up there! 31 runners started the race at 6:00 Saturday morning. 18 runners made it to our aid station at mile 61.3, the first one arriving 10 hours and 15 minutes after the start of the race. That runner went on to win the race, finishing in just over 21 hours. That is completely mind-boggling to me!! The general consensus from the runners is that this is the most difficult 100 miler they have ever run. It was a technically difficult course, with steep climbs, difficult terrain, and the cold to battle. Next year, the course will be reversed (it makes a big loop), so the parts of the course run in the dark this year will be run in the daylight hours next year. We're already looking forward to next year.
