    What kind of computer do you have?

    Mine is a 2004 desk top Gateway. Not that I would understand what you describe.

    Re: What kind of computer do you have?

    I have 3-4 computers that I use somewhat regularly:

    1. My 2006 15" MacBook Pro laptop. I don't use this much, but it's plugged in at the house (battery is shot) and gets used occasionally, mostly as a backup, in case something goes wrong with...

    2. The church's 2008 15" MacBook Pro laptop. I use this everyday. The battery is almost completely shot, so it has to be plugged in. Mostly this stays at the church, but I bring it home sometimes. We use it on Sunday mornings to run ProPresenter (words for songs on the screen).

    3. My 2012 iPad. I use this everyday. WiFi only, but most places I do any work have WiFi, so that's not a problem.

    4. My 2010 iPhone 4. I use this everyday, too. It's much more than a phone. I use it for email, web browsing, etc. It really should be counted as a very, very mobile computer.

    My hope is to add a fifth one this year: a new iMac. I'm just waiting for Apple to update them. It will serve as the main church computer, the 2008 laptop will become a floating back-up, and my old 2004 will probably get sold off or something. Oh, and I'll likely sell my iPhone 4 and replace it with an iPhone 5.

    Dell 17-inch Studio laptop -- I think about 2008

    Dell Netbook -- 2008

    Toshiba Satellite laptop -- 2011

    I'll probably never have another Dell.

    Until January, I had a 2004 Dell desktop. I told my son (who is a computer tech) "Find me a computer", and he found me an HP Pro. That's what it says on the front of it, and that's about all I know about it!

    I use a 2010 MacBook Pro. I've upgraded the memory and hard drive myself, and it runs Mountain Lion. I always attempt to keep it plugged in, so the battery is doing pretty well.

    I also use a 3rd generation iPad. It has come in handy when in meetings, using it for notes in the class that I teach, and occupying the minds of my nieces and nephew when I'm not sure what else to do.

    Lastly, I was able to upgrade to an iPhone 5. It is always in my pocket, and the apps that you can download won't extend my life by any means, but they are incredibly useful for everyday things.

    I use all 3 items everyday.

    A 2010 Asus desktop which I use every day.

    A 2009 MSi netbook which I use once in a blue moon. The wifi doesn't work anymore which really limits how much I can use it. I bought it for my online classes but now that they are done, I mostly use it for vacations or when I want to take many documents with me to meetings [which I am doing tonight] but have no need to print them all off.

    Maybe around the springtime I'll consider getting a smartphone.

    Almost exclusively, I use a 2010 MacBook Pro and an iPad 2. I also have an HP laptop (from 2008 or '09?) that does get some occasional usage, and an HP desktop (I think it's 2007) that gets some rare use (usually just for file storage). My phone's an LG Smartphone, but one of these days I'm going to jump over to iPhone. It is the only thing that I haven't gone Apple with yet. Oh, and I usually use an actual Kindle for an e-reader instead of just the app on my iPad. It's easier on my eyes and brain for long reading.

    I use a 2010 15" Macbook Pro that my church owns. I also use an iPhone 4s that is also owned by my church. I haven't gotten an iPad yet, but it's not too far away I'm sure.

    Oh, and I sometimes use a 2010ish iMac that is in the sound booth at our church. We use it to record sermons and to run ProPresenter for media in the sanctuary.

    My family also owns a Gateway desktop computer from about 2010ish. It gets used a LOT by my kids and some by my wife. I rarely use it. Except, that it's also our DVR for broadcast television (we ditched the dish) because it has a digital tv tuner in it, a remote control, and Windows Media Center is a nice free DVR.

    That's interesting, as it's working when 8 yrs old! My last one made it to 6.25 yrs (December'11), and just got replaced, finally, on 30 Sept this year.

    Mountain Lion? Have heard of several OS's, but never that one. What makes it "different"?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Anyway, when my desktop died last December o/a 5th, finally found 30-31 December a 60% off Blackberry Playbook (7" tablet). Was nice to hook up with while having no desktop, tho' could not print from it. But am still a bit frustrated that it says it will now use Android items, yet when I try, I keep getting the "You have no devices!" message when I choose Android over Windows or Mac in the "options" section of whatever app.
    The device with which the old desktop was replaced finally is a Gateway 8G RAM/2T HD desktop ... with the antenna finally in place this afternoon, after wondering what was wrong when using it a couple of days on-line and it was rather slow! Maybe this one will last more than the i6.25 the last one did, tho' I tho't that didn't seem too bad, until seeing some others have had them longer than that and they're sitll working.
    It is their latest OS that came out in July. Biggest additions are greater iCloud integration, dictation, and built in sharing with ther apps.
    Re: What kind of computer do you have?
    I use a 2010 13" macbook pro for most things, also have a couple of ipads and a couple of ipod touch thingys. Also have a couple of mic stand adaptors for the ipads so that they can be used in church as remote stage displays or as controllers for either propresenter or the sound mixer. Real versatile stuff for sure.
    On the PC side we have a couple of HP laptops, one that my wife uses most of the time and the other one generally stays with the sound equipment where it's used mostly. A few years back I bought one of the HP touchsmart PC's I thought that a touch screen would be nice. Big mistake, the touchscreen isn't really helpful in a desktop application and when the display is pushed over to the far corner of the desk so that it's not in the way, you can't reach it anyway. I've got an few IBM workstation towers that are getting to replacement time, one is set up with dual monitors and a pair of yamaha nearfield audio monitors. It gets used for drafting, video editing and audio recording/editing. Another one is gathering dust and the third one hasn't been used in a while, it's set up with a vinyl printer/cutter for signmaking purposes.
    Kevin,
    Do you access cable channels online, or just the broadcast channels? I have seen a couple of sites where you can stream the cable channels for free. What sites are good for streaming cable channels?
    Re: What kind of computer do you have?
    Betty and I each have HP laptops, eMachine desktops, iPad 1 and HTC Android phones. the laptops are about 7 years old. Mine overheats and shuts down, and hers lost the display, so she had to connect to an external monitor. We don't use them except to show something on the tv. The desktops are about 3 years old and are working ok. The iPads are now 2 years old, and we use them a lot, and take them when we are traveling. The phones are 1 year old, and we will upgrade to the iPhone sometime in the spring. That's just at home!
    At church, where I run all of the video, we have 3 computers: a Dell desktop that is about 5 years old, running good; a 3 year old desktop that one of our guys built. The video card is about to go out, so we just replaced it last month with a new Samsung laptop. These run Power Point for the announcements and the pastor's sermon, and Media Shout on front and rear projectors.
    Godspeed!
    From what Kevin wrote, it doesn't sound like he's streaming any of it online. He's catching the "over the air" digital broadcast TV with the digital tv tuner and DVR'ing it with Windows Media Center.
    Of course, he might also be streaming stuff online and might have a great answer to your question. We'll see.
    HP media center with quad core, upgraded graphics card (nvidia) and power supply (550 watts). I actually bought the computer for half price on amazon about 3 years back right after Christmas. Spent about only 800 bucks in total. The computer retailed at over 1 grand.
    We only do broadcast TV. I think that most of those sites that stream cable are basically stealing it. There are some legit sites like hulu.com which will let you watch previously broadcasted shows.
    Yes, we are capturing the over the air broadcast with an antenna. We do stream netflix, but that isn't recorded.
