    Windows Updates

    Computer said it was DL'ing updates, then installing them. Then there was a place to click "Review Update History." It said three of them had failed (indicating "Error Code 643," think it was):

    Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)
    Installation date: ‎10/‎11/‎2012 3:17 AM
    Installation status: Failed

    Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x64-based Systems (KB973688)
    Installation date: ‎10/‎11/‎2012 3:14 AM
    Installation status: Failed

    Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x64-based Systems (KB954430)
    Installation date: ‎10/‎11/‎2012 3:13 AM
    Installation status: Failed

    So, I started from the beginning, after the computer was restarted, and it again said these three had failed. WHAT is going on? Do I have a defective Windows deal, or defective hard drive that did not register the entire Windows system correctly ... this thing has just been set up less than a week, and a couple of days online, only!

    What next ........... ??? Thank you!

    Re: Windows Updates

    Still not getting it to tell me that all the updates were included, "successful," but still have three showing as "failed." NOT cool when just a brand new computer. What do we do now?

    Thanks!

    I found this on the Microsoft site, and it sounds like your error. Maybe give it a try?

    Re: Windows Updates

    We're checking it out. We tried the first one, tho', and it said "three optional" things were available, and they were not the Service Pack and C+ etc that were the problems ("failed" to install/update) initially. So, we'll have to try one of the other options, and hope we don't make more of a mess!

    Re: Windows Updates

    OK, we wiped it all out, did a restart, and now it says two not installed/failed, not three. Yet, the service packs being re security ................

    Here's the first one:

    Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x64-based Systems (KB973688)
    Installation date: ‎10/‎17/‎2012 4:44 AM
    Installation status: Failed
    Error details: Code 643
    Update type: Important
    Install this update to prevent applications from sending too many HTTP requests while a well-known Document Type Definition (DTD) is included. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

    AND here's the second one:

    Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x64-based Systems (KB954430)
    Installation date: ‎10/‎17/‎2012 4:43 AM
    Installation status: Failed
    Error details: Code 643
    Update type: Important
    A security issue has been identified in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Re: Windows Updates

    Try to directly download them and manually install them. Then rerun windows update and see if it's happy. Here are the links:

    KB973688

    KB954430

    Re: Windows Updates

    OK, not sure what is going on! Want to get those back-up DVDs made before something happens! We went to those links you provided, Kevin (thank you), and clicked on the download. It asked if we wanted to just save them or RUN them. Told them to RUN. It gave 3 options, and I picked the one that did not ask if I wanted to change anything about the file, but to just run as it was (middle one of the bunch).

    Then after doing this with each one, did a computer restart. Asked in the Windows Update area to "ViewUpdate History." These two file AGAIN came up: "FAILED." WHAT on earth now? Guess we google to see if we can find if the other one we saw the other day with trouble re these two had a Gateway, too, or if it's happening to other computers, too, and strictly a Windows problem.

    ETA: here's a link to where GOOGLE seems to show that these two files have been a problem for a long time, so it's not just my computer:

    http://www.google.com/#hl=en&output=...iw=823&bih=446

    Guess I had just better go ahead & make those back-up DVDs, and then get the $14.95 Windows 8 Pro update that's to be available in a few days. HOPEFULLY, they'll have the security issues/files fixed in it!?

    Thanks much for trying to help.

    Re: Windows Updates

    Oops! Tho't we were through. Browsed some more and found that someone said they should install if you disable temporarily the Windows firewall, and then enable it again. Will try that. (may be back, hopefully w/good news)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Well, I'm back ... and it's not good. After doing all that ~~ disabling firewall, reinstalling, restarting ~~nothing. Still show exactly as above ... FAILED! Dang . . . . . . .
    So, is this how hackers get into Windows ... via the spots that are not working correctly, rather than hacking into a well functioning system?
    Ugh!
