Was I hearing things, but I thought I could hear the announcer "snickering" in the background.

That might be an actual call but that can not be a serious call...no one is that ... clueless. Kind of reminds me of the prank calls a college friend would make for fun back in the day before caller ID.

I wonder what she thinks of all those older railroad crossing signs? Those things can even KILL someone.

I wonder if preventing landslides is as easy as getting rid of all the Falling Rock signs.

Possibly, but when the poor gal had three accidents involving deer (knock on wood, recalling a close call when driving in the UP eons ago), and the way she kept going on ... not so sure.

Oh, my friend could say stuff like that and it would be an utter fabrication. I am not saying that this person is pulling a prank like my friend would, just saying that it really reminds me of my friend who was an excellent prankster. I could see my friend doing the whole thing like this caller did.

    Re: Deer Crossing Signs

On the other hand, those signs used to all print the words, "Deer Crossing", and now more frequently they just have the outline of the deer. Maybe it's because they figured deer can't read?

I kinda like what they do in Pennsylvania. They don't pay state employees to pick up the deer, and you see deer carcasses all over the place. Neither do they have the expense of putting up signs. They figure that if you see a dead deer lying on the road, drivers will know that it's a deer crossing. They never have to move signs, and their method is pretty much always accurate.

    Re: Deer Crossing Signs

We put up signs in Vermont that say, "Moose Crossing Next 10 Miles" or "Moose Crossing Next 7 Miles". Now if we could just train the moose to stay between the signs.

One of my neighbors had just bought a Camaro, got some custom work done on it, etc., and she put in a lot of miles through "moose territory". So she bought some of those deer/moose alert whistles to install on her car--they're supposed to emit some kind of sound that repels the animals and therefore keeps them from leaping out in front of your car.

A couple of weeks later, I was walking up past the mechanic's shop, and there she was, standing by her smashed up Camaro. "What happened to your car?!?!" I asked her. She turned around and snarled at me, "Very funny!!" Apparently she thought I was poking fun at her, and that I already knew that she'd hit a dead moose.

Those whistles don't work very well at warning a dead moose.

    Re: Deer Crossing Signs

Idaho Fish and Game set out deer manequins some yards off of roads going through popular hunting areas to catch poachers shooting from the road.

I recall as a child upon learning how to address letters to my grandparents, I was to start it by writing, "Dear Grandma and Grandpa, how are you," and when I saw such signs I often thought, " Deer Crossing, how are you?"

    Re: Deer Crossing Signs

I posted this on my Facebook page a couple weeks ago when we drove up to Montana.

Drove past a "Moose Crossing" sign yesterday, but no moosesses to be seen. They always put schools near "School Crossing" signs, the least they could do is put a moose near moose crossing signs.

Then we drove through Elk Meadow, but all the elk looked oddly similar to cows and horses, and one mule. if they cant find real elk to put in the meadow, they should just call it "cows, horses and a mule meadow."
    Same logic, different desired outcome.

Saw 3 of them last night. Tried to warn an uncoming vehicle...but the driver didn't get the message until...SPLAT!

    Re: Deer Crossing Signs

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a lady from New York, while I was in Custer State Park. She was upset that the ranger had just said that Custer had to kill some Mountain Lions, because their population was getting too high, and were starting to get out to the ranchlands. She aloud asked why the park did not post boundary markers so the lions would know where to stay.
On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place.

It was a serious call - she says she gets it now. She has been teased by family, friends, co-workers and neighbors.
