What is Education coming to?

After posting the notice of the Helena, MT school district proposal to offer sex education starting in Kindergarten, I decided to check through various sources as to the state of education. Here are some items I came across

Provincetown, Mass. to offer condoms to elementary school children down to Kindergarten with instructions on how they are to be used.


Committee of Texas Social Studies teachers proposing to eliminate any mention of Christmas, Rosh Hashanah, Albert Einstein, the Liberty Bell, Mother Teresa and Jonas Salk.

Ivy League schools where a graduate with a major in History does not take any American History, an English major takes no notice of Shakespeare and a Religious Study major does not have to make any contact with the Bible.

The NEA now not only has a Gay Caucus, Lesbian Caucus, Cross Dresser Caucus but a Drag Queen Caucus. I just do not see how Bible believers could possibly put membership dues into that organization.

How deplorable!

One glimmer of hope was that Chino Valley SD in California had approved a course using the Bible.

The above three remind me of miseducation or brainwashing by Socialist Communism.

I just found a report on the NEA convention and followed links attached. I once was a candidate for president of the North Franklin School District education association at Connell when it was still considered a professional organization on par with the AMA and the ABA before it became a union. I lost by one vote because my spouse voted for the other guy. More recently some years ago I read an article in the Readers' Digest that the largest obstacle to improving US schools was the NEA. To my knowledge they are the only organization I have ever heard of who are trying to reduce their potential market by favoring abortion.

I think that education first started going wrong when kids didn't have to write a 10 page research paper to graduate from high school. All else is just icing on the cake.

Personally, if we had this policy in Jr. High I probably would have taken advantage of it. That is to say in the "taking advantage of" sense of the phrase, and not the "made good use of" sense. Do you know how much a creative Jr. Higher can do with one of those things? They can hold over a gallon of water, plus fit easily over one's head.

The SBOE adopted numerous recommendations by professors, teachers, and experts (religious freedom language is one example). However, the SBOE rejected other recommendations made by some professors and/or teachers, such as completely removing Christmas, Rosh Hashanah, Neil Armstrong, Albert Einstein, George Patton, the Liberty Bell, Mother Teresa, and Jonas Salk. The SBOE also rejected efforts by some teachers and/or professors to reduce the teaching on Independence Day and Veterans Day.

ACTA probes the extent to which today's English majors are required to take courses on Shakespeare's work. While at one point such requirements were common, this report reveals that today they are not. Of the 70 colleges researched by ACTA--private and public, large and small, from the Washington, D.C. area and on to the rest of the country--only 15 require their English majors to take a course on the Bard. ACTA also points out that as Shakespeare becomes merely an option for the English teachers of tomorrow, offerings in such areas as critical theory, "body studies," and popular culture are proliferating. The report concludes with a description of what concerned administrators, trustees, alumni, parents, and students can do to provoke change. The release of the report coincided with a a six-month celebration of Shakespeare in the nation's capital. It updates and complements ACTA's 1996 report The Shakespeare File.

Changed days, my schools, my education, always started with scripture, assemblies were christian, God was honoured. We didnt get sex education, that was for parents, hadnt a clue what a condone was!! Were we better off, for certain we were, we grew up straight kids who knew right from wrong.

I dunno, I spoke with a guy with some very interesting views on the week-end who blamed all of this "depraved teaching" on a "leftist, Muslim, New Age conspiracy" and that our former Prime Minister and your present President were both involved in it.

His arguements were so bizzare that I had no idea how to respond to them!

Another perspective on the direction education is going....I attended a 2 day Best Practices In Education Summit this past week. For every ridiculous school district media story, there are millions of other stories that are never reported. I engaged in passionate conversation with peers who have devoted their lives and money to giving students a quality education. Our focus was on closing the learning gap among minorities. We had world class speakers in the education field address us with hope...something educators need in a country which likes to categorize us all into some sort of stereotype. If I want to continue to live in a country where my civil rights are defended and my values upheld, I must agree to allow that social contract to extend to gay, lesbian, and transgender students as well. The public school system is for all citizens of this nation. I think many of us hold to the warm fuzzy remembrances of being the angel in the school Christmas program in 1969 or praying over our graham crackers and milk. Those were fond memories. However, while we white protestants were exercising OUR freedom, we certainly were doing so at the expense of others. I listen to my latino students talk about God, their first communion parties and use those as teachable moments to discuss family traditions that are meaningful. I also am able to tell my students "Please don't say Oh My GOD!" those may be just words to you, but to another friend they they may be sacred". I am building a community of tolerance and love in my classroom. As far as my district, any sex education course must have parental consent. However, the program we use for first grade is high quality, age appropriate and delivered through certified instructors from Girls Inc. We have actually been able to identify students who were being subjected to abuse through this program. My suggestion to people whom criticize our pubic school system is "get involved"! With district lay-offs and cutbacks, many schools are desperate for volunteers. Make meaningful contacts with your local school. Be there applauding their efforts when good things happen. They will take your criticism much more seriously when they aren't measuring up so well.

I often have people thank me for my service to our country. It is time for us to remember "serving our country" isn't something unique to those in the military and realize that those who teach our children in the public school system are also serving our country. As a veteran educator it just appalls me as to the direction some districts are going. Esther is still teaching in the Boise Public School System and I have opportunity to visit with her colleagues and principal quite often. I also have contact through teaching in the district's community education program. So it is not a matter that I have lost touch with the good that is going on in most school districts. When some of these issues are not shocking enough to make the news then I will really be concerned. Just today I proposed to my pastor an idea of after school tutoring at the church for the students in the church's neighborhood hoping that it could lead to some new contacts for the church without preaching.
