Washington Post cites Nazarene pastor at Trump's Melbourne rally

Feb 23, 2017 - 11:32 AM - by Martha Crafton
Martha Crafton's Avatar My dad (Joseph Bierce) was an evangelist for many years. I'm sure he preached his share of hell/brimstone sermons, but I was always aware that he steered away from the hyper-emotional manipulations of the fiery, handkerchief-waving, high-steppin', crowd-pleasin' guru-like preachers. When I read this article in the Post, I could have "shouted", which would be a real stretch for me. Thankful I am for a pastor who is willing to state out loud his perceptions despite how others may... [Read More]

Should members of the Nazarene clergy run for elected office?

Feb 22, 2017 - 1:20 PM - by Greg Crofford
Greg Crofford's Avatar The story is told that Billy Graham at the height of his influence received a phone call from a political operative. He urged Graham to run for the Senate, and assured him he was a shoe-in for the office if he would run. Graham - referencing Nehemiah's response to Sanballat - replied: "I am doing a great work and I can't come down."

Yet not all have viewed things like Graham. I can think of a few instances of clergy who have either run for office or occupied office while... [Read More]

Online giving

Feb 22, 2017 - 12:48 PM - by Marsha Lynn
Marsha Lynn's Avatar This is a question concerning the practical side of online giving. We are starting to offer that possibility and, as treasurer, I'm trying to figure out how to handle it.

We use the 3-part counters' sheet from NPH. One copy goes to the "giving secretary," (which role is combined with the treasurer position in this case). One copy goes to the pastor, and one is thrust into a repository where it presumably eventually ages and turns to dust.

To date, everything... [Read More]

Church security: What to do with a heckler?

Feb 22, 2017 - 9:45 AM - by Bob Hunter
Bob Hunter's Avatar Imagine the scene, your pastor is preaching a message and a total stranger storms the platform spewing hate-filled rhetoric. It happened to me in 2006 when I was preaching from Romans 13. A drunken Viet Nam veteran interrupted our service with a bizarre rant about killing people during the war. Our congregation was shaken, people were actually scared. I did my best to calm anxieties, but it wasn't easy.

Church security issues are of great concern these days. I served as a... [Read More]
