A Journey With Jesus

His Advent

bar
Each year, at the end of November, our church district has presented "The Walk to Bethlehem," an outdoor play involving hundreds of actors and supporters. A "family leader" leads groups of visitors on a journey from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. They experience some of the events Joseph and Mary witnessed during the last few miles of their extraordinary journey... a journey in which they would be counted and taxed in the Roman census, and participate in the giving and receiving of God's greatest Gift to the world.

Our family groups experience the agitation of Roman soldiers living in a strange land, enforcing Rome's harsh and usurious laws upon an angry and rebellious people. We visit the marketplace at Bethlehem, pay taxes to an ungrateful Roman governor, and witness angels in the heavens proclaiming the greatest of news to the shepherds. We are turned away from inns in the town, full to capacity, finally coming upon the holy couple with their infant Jesus, lying in a manger in a stable meant for donkeys, cattle and sheep.

Our journey does not end there. On the road beyond the stable, we encounter the Magi, wise men from the East, who are following a star and a prophetic message, seeking the Christ child, the King of Kings.

We are then transported through time and space nearly 100 miles to Nazareth, to a carpenter shop, where we find Jesus, as a young man, learning the carpentry trade from Joseph, experiencing humanity, and preparing for His true ministry. Farther along, we observe Jesus, aged 30, teaching His disciples and preparing for His ultimate Sacrifice.

Finally, we come to the foot of a cross, where we learn the true nature of God, who loves us so much that he gave his His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. This is the Gospel ... the Good News.

During two or three evenings each year, more than 2,000 people have taken this journey with us, here in rural Ontario, witnessing the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth. The Holy Spirit has ministered to their spirits, the Good News message touching many hearts.

We invite you to journey with us now, to encounter Jesus through these daily devotional readings. Together, we will journey through the celebration of the birth of Christ and the twelve days of Christmas leading to Epiphany, the day Christ was revealed to the Magi. These Wise Men brought gifts, fit for a king, to Jesus. They were the first to reveal Jesus to the world as the incarnate Christ.

Their act of worship was one of the first indications that Jesus came for all people, all nations, all races, and that the work of God in the world would not be limited to only a few.

Join us, please, and allow your heart to be touched anew, or for the very first time, by the love of God throughout this Christmas season.
