LOVE

God, the Creator of all that we see (and don’t see) had intervened in human affairs before. In fact, He had always made Himself available to those who sought Him.

When you think about it, this is an amazing fact. Think who God is! Although He revealed Himself to humankind in a framework of time and space, He told things about Himself that made one thing quite clear; He exists in a realm beyond our comprehension.

Dwelling in "unapproachable light,"

having such glory that no human being could fully look upon Him and survive the experience,

being of such immensity that the whole heavens and earth cannot contain Him,

existing in a timeless "without beginning or end,"

thinking and acting in ways so far above human ability as to draw comparisons with celestial distances,

this God,

this God

surpassed every previous involvement with His creation, and chose to be born as a human baby just over 2000 years ago! His name was Jesus.

What a stupendous event!

What an incredible condescension!

He, God, became a Man

and while powerfully doing good to all who would receive it, He experienced every form of rejection and suffering with which we humans are familiar.

And then, after atoning for our wrongdoings on the cross, He returned to glory.

We are told in one of the most oft-quoted parts of the ancient book that records these things, that His motivation for such a wonderful, incomprehensible plan was love.

Love!

Real love!

Not favour with "strings attached," but total, unconditional acceptance of who we are

Not a reward for an excellence that few if any could attain, but an unswervable desire to do us good, with nothing but love desired in return

Not a whimsical, cavalier, capricious affection, but a genuine and consistent concern for our welfare

God’s kind of love!

Maybe, during this Advent season, you are aware that you have never known that kind of love before.

Maybe no one has even said to you, "I love you." Or maybe most who have, have used those words to gain advantage – even unknowingly.

But nothing you have ever done can stop God loving you

And nothing you could ever do could make Him love you more than He does already.

Because He came to earth as the Christ child so long ago, we are able to be reconciled to Him, and enjoy a special relationship with Him for eternity!

This is the message of Advent. May it dawn on you this year as never before.

Prayer

Unconditional love. We had looked for it in so many places and people, but could never find it. Then You showed us that such love comes only from You, Father. It is almost impossible to even know You, but to know that Your love endures forever means that we can have the love we have really been looking for.
Thank You for giving it. We accept such love from You. We are saddened by the fact that many of our friends and family have not accepted it. May this be the time that they do... the time that they understand that they can only have it if they will receive it.

Amen
