Country folks always have a chuckle when their urban cousins come to visit and are amazed to discover the source of their bacon, eggs and milk. The experience sometimes leaves the one in discovery in a position that a "swearing off" takes place.
But, in His wisdom, God created an environment through which mankind has the possibility of not only surviving, but thriving once the resources around have been utilized to their potential. And then, "mother nature" strikes. She's a fickle lady, and can not be predicted. And, in the face of disaster we discover how much we truly are at her mercy.
Nature has a way of making us depend upon God. Our resources come from its bounty, and even a major part of the world's economy and social structures are defined directly by the results of nature's whims.
So, when the traditional song reminds us of 8-maids-a-milking, let us not forget that there is a major area of our existence over which we often have very little control. We do not necessarily have to fear that, but if we do not learn how to honestly respect it, our lives will see serious trouble.
God gives us the gift of life. Let us use it well.
Father,
Today I acknowledge Your provision of all good things in my life. As I begin this New Year, help me to establish You as having first place in my life. Help me acknowledge that I need You every step of the way from now until December 31st, and then on into the next century. You have been good to me, and I am looking forward to seeing Your blessing as we walk together in the days to come.
Amen
