Epiphany is "to show" or "to make known." In the context of our Christian views, we believe that epiphany is God being made known to man -- through His son Jesus. Historically the celebration focuses on the wise men following a star to the baby Jesus. It was by following the light that God could be made known to the wise men through Jesus.

How is God made known to men and women in our world at the beginning of this new millennium? We certainly can't follow a star to a manger and yet somehow people are still meeting God for the first time. The answer lies in the one He has left for us--His Holy Spirit. And many times, He chooses to use you and me as vessels through which the Holy Spirit can lead people to God.

So the question becomes, am I a vessel God can use? Is my life filled with the light of the Holy Spirit? Are my words, actions, and attitudes reflections of the God I serve?

God warned the Israelites in Deut. 6:13-15 against false gods and religions. Today, we are tempted to serve our own selfish desires--our employers, our spouses, our children, our hobbies, or even our churches. Although all of these things are important, all too often we allow our focus and ultimately the light that shines in our life to turn from God to the "false gods" of our own making.

The light within us -- no matter what it is shining for -- will shine. Does your light shine for the false gods around you or is it a reflection of your total submission to the Lord? In Luke 8:16-17, Jesus says "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts in under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought into the open." People will know what light is shining within us. Maybe today, you see that your light shining for the temporary things of this world. If so, seek the light of the Holy Spirit, so that through you, people might experience an epiphany.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you today for the light you sent into the world through your son Jesus. And thank you also for sending your Holy Spirit to be the light in our world today. May it shine brightly so that others see you at work in us, and follow the light to You.

In the precious name of your son Jesus -

Amen.
