              Simply Divine

Swaddling clothes, virgin, Holy Ghost, manger, angels, dreams, wise men, kings, stars, all in the complicated birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Is it any wonder people find it all a little hard to comprehend? The complication of a God who loves us so much to give his only Son, a Son who loves us so much to allow himself to be crucified, seems overwhelming if we try to figure out the details. So why not leave the complications to theology, Sunday School, or Bible studies, and during Christmas and the coming new year, approach Jesus in a simple way.

Our lives in the United States, and perhaps in other modern societies, become so complicated that many illnesses and deaths originate in stress from these complications. Psychologists, sociologists, doctors, teachers, mothers, children, and wise people, encourage us to slow down, focus on the important things which are often the most simple ones. The highly stressed individual, whether in careers, school, home, or church life, occasionally must "get away from it all," afterwards feeling like a new person. Often they will go to a quiet, slowed down, perhaps country area where they can "simply relax." They eat, sleep, play and enjoy the fact that they are alive, leaving all the complicated stress behind them. Using this same technique, if we would leave the complications of theology and religion behind, perhaps we could relax in Jesus.

Jesus Christ was born in a simple place. The message is simple. God exists. God loves you. Jesus died for you. You have the promise of heaven. If you don't want to think about heaven or hell, think about the simple fact that a life in Christ is a good life. Even IF you died and were no more, your whole life believing in Christ, and living a life with God in it, would be better than living life withOUT God in it. No promise of a perfect life with no complications. But a promise of a God who cares. That's the simple difference. You might lose a child without God in your life. You might lose a child with God in your life. Logic shows which one would be the better life. You might be rich or you might be poor without God in your life, and you would be the same with God in your life. But the simple fact is, rich or poor, life is better with God in it. Every pleasure that gives real satisfaction is available under God's instruction. God wants to give us fruitful lives. It's that simple.

So let's take the first step toward a joyful life. During the Christmas season and in the coming year, when things seem too stressful, too complicated, give it all to God, and seek the answers in God's word, in prayer, and in fellowship with other Christians. Jesus came to us in a down- to-earth manner. Let's return the favor. At some point, remove ourselves from the blinking lights, glitter, loud music, and pressure of our social Christmas. Let's find in a corner somewhere, a quiet manger scene, sit alongside of it, and think of the peace that was given to us one starry night. God is with us through the complicated things life brings, and helps us to know that life is, indeed, simply divine.

              Father,

Your Son instructed us to come to Him, lay our burden at His feet and receive a healthy yoke from Him. He promised us that He would give us rest in place of our burden. Thank You for reminding us that our stress is not Your plan. Help us to learn to trust, to lean and to depend upon you at all times; in every circumstance; and all to Your glory and honor.

              Amen
