A devotional for day 21

LENT

Friday, March 31

bar

Advent was the season of anticipation of the birth of the King, usually a joyous season. Lent, on the other hand, is a season of sadness. Why is that? Historically, the church has looked at Lent as the days preceding the death of the Messiah and used it as a period of introspection and grieving. But perhaps we need to look at it from a different perspective. Perhaps we need to look at Lent as a JOYOUS season, a season of anticipation, not of the cross, but of the Resurrection! Sure, we celebrate Easter, but if there had been no Good Friday, there would BE no Easter.

Does that mean we should celebrate the DEATH of Jesus? Celebrate the horrific inhumanities He suffered on the cross? Celebrate the treachery and betrayal that led up to it? Celebrate, if you will... sin?

Perhaps. Perhaps we, as those who have reaped the benefit of the tragedy of the cross and find eternal life in the glory of Easter, should do just that! Perhaps we should celebrate an all-powerful and awesome God who can take such wretchedness and bring glory! Perhaps we should celebrate the obedience of the Lord, who willingly took that upon himself for us....... for us. For you, for me, for all those in the world who still really don't care that He did so, and.... perhaps.... never will.

As we go through this Lenten season, perhaps we should use this time as we use the advent season, to announce not the wonder of the birth, but the glory of the death of the Savior. Is it such an unusual idea?

Think about it..... should we not be celebrating the love of a God who sent His ONLY son to DIE...... FOR US?

In the glory of the resurrection, let us not forget the glory of the death. Let us not forget the willingness of the one, the ONLY one not deserving of the death, who embraced it gladly. Let us remember the wonder of the words of Jesus, " Father, forgive them...". Let us never forget that it could have been..... should have been...... us.

So, should Lent be a time of Celebration?

Perhaps?

Prayer

Lord, during this season of Lent, help us to remember that the baby in the manger is also the Christ on the cross. Help us to remember that it is because of His death on the cross that we live. Help us to remember the awesomeness of God that brought life from death, joy from despair, and salvation for sin. Help us to remember, Lord....

Amen
