WHAT HAPPENED ON WEDNESDAY?
John 21:25: "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I
suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."
When I accepted my first pastorate many years ago, there was one thing that especially
concerned me. It was quite apparent to me that I did not know everything. You see I was raised
in the church and had set under the ministry of several wise and mature pastors who always
seemed to have all the answers. Now that I was one of them, I was afraid I would let my fellow
ministers down by having to confess that I just simply "didn't know" sometimes. After a period of
time, I began to see life from a more mature point of view. I came to realize that I was the only
one who expected me to have all the answers. What a relief! It is great to realize I am free to not
know some things! Having come to that realization nearly 27 years ago, I am quite comfortable
with the question "What happened on Wednesday of Holy week?"
This day falls in the middle of an eventful week. Jesus had spent much time at the Temple. There
had been confrontations with various authorities. He had taught the multitudes as well as the
disciples. Of course, yet to come was the ordeal of the cross and the other events we consider
this week.
So what happened on Wednesday? Some say it was a day of rest for our Lord. They think Jesus
took the day off to be strengthened in soul and body. That may well be true. Jesus was kept a
wearing schedule, with greater intensity to come. The fact is, though, I don't know and neither do
you!
In John 21:24 John admits to us that Jesus did a lot of things we don't know about. From this
truth, we can learn at least two lessons:
First, as we have already noted, we don't have to know everything. Life is full of questions
without answers. We are free in God's eyes to relax about many of them:
Why do good people suffer?
Why are there so many different denominations?
Why do some prayers seem to go unanswered?
Honestly, we just don't know. I am so glad I am called to a life of faith, not knowledge!
Second, we can be sure that on that Wednesday of Holy Week Jesus was doing "the perfect
thing." If Jesus did rest on Wednesday, it was because it was the perfect thing to do. If he
preached, taught and healed, THAT was the right thing to do. You see, whatever the Lord
chooses to do in any situation, is the right thing to do. He makes no mistakes!
Perhaps one day you may meet someone in heaven who became a believer or was healed
because of what Jesus did on Wednesday. We are not called to always know, but to always
believe. One of the things we are to believe is that God always knows even when we don't.
What happened on Wednesday? No one knows. But Wednesday does remind us that:
First, it is not necessary for us to have all the answers in life.
Second, that whatever happened was right simply because the Lord did it.
And that, my friend, is good enough!

Father,
Spending time with you is the joy of my life. Thank you
for being there,
even when I let the concerns of life seem to overwhelm me.
Help me to set
my sights on things above the shallow level of where I
usually let my focus
fasten. May I sing with the psalmist: "In Thee, O Lord, I
put my trust."
Amen
